The Bean Book

Options
With autumn coming and the general need to tighten our belts I have dusted off my ancient copy of The Bean Book. Lots of recipes look pretty good and I remember a few. Does anyone have any favourites from this one that they would recommend I start off with?

Many thanks, Ness.

    Lentil and mushroom slice

    lentil pie

continental lentil toad in the hole

    black-eyed bean and vegetable stew

You've reminded me I still have this book - falling to pieces literally.
  • Just ordered one , looks good :)
  • I loved this book and used it a lot as an improverished newly wed! My favourite was bean and wheat casserole, mmmmh, and I liked the black bean and vegetable stew.
  • Sounds like a good book, who is the author?

If you can make it cheaper do so. If it's not reduced, in Primark, off ebay or free I can't have it

I used it a lot too but when we first got married our mortgage was 3/4 of our joint wage as the value of our starter home plummetted, so in those days we found 'Cheap and Easy' to be better value than The Bean Book! I find that a little austere and lacking in variety now, though there are still some staples that I churn out at the end of the month such as the parsley burgers.
  • I have just dusted off my copy of this book ,this thread reminded me I had it.Used to make lots of the lentil recipes from it.In these days of ever increasing food prices seems like a good idea to try some of them again.
  • I have it and agree that it is a little austere. I just adapt the recipes to suit myself. Some good ideas but cheffy adaptations such as butter and proper pastry etc enhances the recipes.
