faulty phone lead

I purchased a charger and a lead (two seperate parts) from my Orange store 2 months ago.
Long story short the lead ended up being faulty today. I went to the Orange shop and he said he could exchange it or refund it but only if I had a receipt. As far as I'm aware I no longer have it and had to buy a new lead. Now I know it only cost me £4.99 but it isn't the point. It wasn't my fault it was faulty in less than two months.
I may be wrong but I thought if something was faulty you could get an exchange or refund without a receipt.
Am I wrong?
Thanks guys

I think you will need some sort of proof of purchase (a bank/credit card statement would also do), otherwise they cannot know where or when you bought it.

Even if it is an orange store own brand?Debts: Gym £[strike]465.75[/strike] Student account [strike]£1039.88[/strike] Overdraft [strike]£129.00[/strike] Credit Card [strike]£2772.22[/strike] Loan [strike]£6222.01 [/strike]

I imagine they would still want proof of purchase to show when it was purchased. The warranty probably only covers it for a year, so you need to prove you bought it within the last 12 months.ovetta2001 wrote: »Even if it is an orange store own brand?

Just as the law protects consumers when making purchases it also protects the retailer. Who's to say the goods didn't come from another store elsewhere ? Not everybody is honest !
As others have said a receipt is not required by law, but you must be able to prove that you made the purchases from that store, whether it be via a loyalty card, a bank statement, a credit card statement. Without that the retailer is under no obligation to replace or refund.0
