Mushroom foraging

Hi

I wondered if there was anyone on this thread who has some expertise regarding foraging mushrooms?

The reason I ask is that there are a few places near to me where I can get mushrooms, but I lack the experience to know which ones are edible and which are not!

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where any of us inexperienced foragers could post a photo of our finds and someone more experienced could advise what type of mushroom it appears to be.

I have the River Cottage book which is really interesting and useful, but I have a couple of types of mushroom which I'm not sure about.

Any thoughts? And are there any experienced foragers out there who could help???

  • Best to go on a course. My dad taught me about mushrooms and I forage for a special 3 or 4 different ones. There are many fungi that can make you very sick. Don`t try unless you are shown in person

    Hi Donna.

I doubt if the site would be happy with people relying on other posters to identify fungi.

I am a mushroom forager and have only gained confidence through doing it for over a decade. I take a small book out with me to eliminate toxic fungi and any I bring home I cross reference with several more books at home.

It is a great year for mushrooms so I would recommend learning a little more about them then getting out to claim your food for free.
  • I read today that Nicholas Evans (he wrote The Horse Whisperer), his wife and some other people, were taken to hospital after cooking and eating wild mushrooms they picked in Scottish woodlands  I think they're all doing ok but I couldn't help smiling at the Horse Whisperer writer being descibed as being in a stable condition!

Have to agree with you there ;) I'll close this thread and refer it to the team for advice.

There's a previous thread here on courses in fungi identification (I went on a FOC one organised by the local Authority :j ).

Tony Lyon's book is brilliant for fungi identification, btw :D
