Anyone ever paid for a professional CV?

Hi
In a bit of a quandry at the moment. I had my CV reviewed ( trashed) and was offered some hints and tips on re writing it! Now they also offered their own service at about £179 + VAT and a cover letter thrown in. I am also aware that i need to present myself in a more positive light on the CV and highlight achievements etc..probably too 'British' for that when doing it myself:o
I have compared some on line ones and they average at about £100+ covering letters extra.
I am aware that these are for different professions and i am in the teaching profession. Most of the jobs are application based and only agency or speculation posts are cv based.
Has anyone ever used these sort of services and at the end of the day are they worth it?

Hi, I personally would not use this service.
When I have re-jigged my CV, I have used the web for different latouts etc. Tiy should also be able to google Cover letters and modify them to what you want.
Or, you could try the job centre for advice.

I would never pay to have a CV done - I have always done my own, never had a problem with them either. I rejigged mine with the help of my ex employer last year when I was on redeployment before being made redundant:rolleyes:
If you want to pay someone then pay me LOL0 -
NOoooooo £179 is an awful lot of money and unless they could guarantee me the job of my dreams or my money back I would not touch them with a barge pole......
I used to work for a service that did the revamping of CV's following redundancy. Its just a case of tailoring your cv to the job and yes you do have to sell yourself.....Why don't you get one of us on here to look it over for you.. I would be quite happy to help.. for nothing!Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

no, never. Are the company who trashed it the same company who want to charge you £179???
Have a look online for templates, or many Monster jobs? I know they have interview tips.
Try your local Adult Learning centre for a day doing CV's - we sometimes do a day's course on producing a professional one, we aren't doing one this term but I'd guess at them being around £25 or so."Stay Wonky":D

Thanks everyone. In answer to your questions, yes it is the same company who reviewed it who wish to charge me that amount.
I have to add that a couple of months ago my CV was with a different agency and they complimented me on it.I also was offered an interview and a placement for a school locally!! So couldn't have been that bad. I suppose some of me was thinking that i was missing out on something that they could offer..but after thinking about it for the afternoon will definately not be using their services.
I have a couple of templates and will rejig according to those..i may also be taking up some offers..so be warned!Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

I don't mind having a look for you. I work for a local authority as an Accountant and have reviewed a few applications in the past when we are recruiting. I don't mind having a look and giving you feedback.
Also google - (CV Buzzwords) without the brackets for web sites which tell you some of the key words it might be an idea to use. This is what I did for my last application and got the job with a £10.5k pay rise.

Thanks Amanda and Amy. I have just googled some of the free cover letters and the same for cv builders. I was shocked at how sparse the examples were and also i felt mine was a tad better.
I think the woman on the phone just rattled me a bit and that was obviously her job to get more business. Weird really i have tackled all sorts of folk, but when it comes to something as subjective as a cv i get all het up about it and start doubting my own abilities!
Good tip about the buzz words thanks.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
