My daughter is off to university in England later this month. We were thinking we'd have to take the car to get all her stuff over there but a friend pointed me to this website: www.sendmybag.com
They'll collect and deliver a bag/box/parcel up to 30kg in weight for £20. I believe you don't have to be a student to use the service.

We've booked with easyjet and it's going to save us a fortune by not taking the car. :j Hope this useful to anyone else in the same boat who is worrying about the cost of university over the next three years. _pale_

  • used this site a number of times. you print the label off and stick it on your bag, the parcelforce van just turns up, you sign for the bag and off it goes. its arrives 2-3 days later
  • If baggage charges keep going up it'll be better to do this than take your bag when you fly by the time you count the effort of dragging it around with you :)
  • Well done, Pinky! I have passed this site on to those with sons or daughters at or going to uni across the pond.

I'd be delighted if either of my girls only took 30kg of stuff away with them. Both of mine are off back to uni on the mainland (Dundee and Newcastle upon Tyne) later this week and DH is hiring a van to carry all of their rubbish over as our estate car isn't big enough:eek: .

I'm being slow here, but what is the difference in the website and just going to Parcelforce direct?
  • theyre cheaper
  • Hi pink-winged!

I'm an NI student in London and you're right to send the stuff over by courier - my folks didn't even come with me when I hopped the pond in 2003!

I know this is thinking ahead but just a point with regards to 'stuff' really - something that came up for me back in my fresher year! I don't know if your daughter is going into halls or not, but if so, she'll need to find something to do with her stuff when she moves out / home over the summer (gets easier in subseqent years as rents are 12 monthly on the most part!) - there are loads of storage companies to leave stuff with. I was lucky enough to have a very good friends dad help me get the stuff to the storage company in his little van lol, but you could easily take it in bits on a bus / in a taxi. You put on your own lock and if I remember correctly mine was £100 for the summer and they refund your deposit when you collect your stuff!

If you are thinking of travelling across by car you should seriously think of joining the ulster farmers union. And no you don't have to be a farmer to join!! We are farmers however plently of my friends are not and are members, and it's simple to join. I think the annual fee is approx £54.
The major benefit is the offers from travel solutions - check before you join that they are still offering the great deals though.
Last year we travelled to Scotland a number of times by van and purchasing through travel solutions with the UFU membership number saved us over £400 last year. On one trip alone we saved £100 compared to buying the ticket from the ferry company. It is one membership worth having if you intend to travel by boat to scotland or england, and you will save far more in one ferry crossing than your actual membership payment cost.
I am also a member of BUPA healthcare and I save 40% on my premiums from being a UFU member, and I also get between 10%-15% off most major hotels, restaurants and loads of money off cupons for national trust and family outings.
Only thing I will say though is that if you ring UFU they appear to be a bit laid back but it is probably due to low staffing numbers which keeps the costs down - thus you get excellent benefits.
