hi
i am desperately trying to get a loan, been turned down everywhere
the last place i spoke to told me that the reason for this is that i have no credit history and i am not on the electoral roll yet

i know i can apply to be put on the electoral roll but how on earth do i get anywhere when they are turning me down because i have no credit, but no one will give me any to prove i can pay??

have not even tried normal banks as i thought it would be a waste of time

thanks

How come you are not on an electoral roll?

The very fact that you have applied and been turned down everywhere will go against you as all these searched will be recorded on your credit file. Your bank would probably have been a good place to start as they know your account history and can see your earnings etc. I would wait a few months now though before applying elsewhere.

To build up your credit history, you need to get a credit card - even if it is one of those with horrendous interest rates - then use it and make sure you pay the bill off in full every month.

Even when you have signed the paperwork in December it will take a few more months after that before you will be on the electoral roll - I think that you should take this time to give you credit report a rest - each search that is done on you report will put a mark against it and make you less appealing to the next lender - These normally stay on your file for a year but if you have no more checks for 6 months you should be ok - Take this time to get on the electoral register - buy a banger car for £200 in the mean time and use this 6 months to get a decent deposit together.

Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
