Aldi, is it worth travelling to?

Options
My nearest Aldi is quite a drive but I thought it might be worth a trip as part of a day out. I've looked at the site, but can't find prices, is it worth the trip?

    Depends what you're buying.
Personally I find them far better value than the other supemarkets but mine is walking distance and my tastes and style of shopping might be very different to yours.
Bit hard to be any more specific without more information

  • We are lucky as our nearest Aldi is just a 10 minute walk.

I would recommend going as I think their food is good quality but cheap. We only have Aldi baked beans (22p a tin) as we think they are better than Heinz!:D

They have brilliant biscuits and 'lunch box' items which, IMO, are really cheap.

Big fans of Aldi here! Also saves us a lot of money on the OH beer! :rotfl:

    Hi moanymoany,

As this is more of a shopping query than Old Style I'll move it across to the Shop but Don't Drop board where the shopping experts will be able to help.

In the meantime these threads from that board may help:

Great What/What Not to Buy at Lidl, Aldi and Netto Hunt

    Aldi Virgin

    Aldi or Lidl?

    is Aldi any good....

Before we moved, we had an Asda, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl. Aldi was nearest.

I found Asda best for a proper shop - they had everything I needed. Tesco second best. However, I always came home with frivolous extras from both. Aldi was good for a basic shop but didn't have everything - can't think what offhand apart from leaf tea. Much cheaper on some things, about the same as Asda on other.

Lidl was the best for fruit and veg - Aldi all prepacked. We preferred some of their stuff to UK brands but I couldn't do a 'proper' shop there, always had to top up in Asda.

There's an Aldi about 12miles from me now, but TBH I wouldn't make a special journey to go there.

I went to visit my sister and there is an Aldi in her town and I was amazed and what a fab place it was. Really nice good quality biscuits and continental foods (eg stuffed olives in jars and antipasta). The town also has a Netto , loved this as well and they also had a Farm Foods which was great. Again I dont think any of them are "one stop Shops" but on the money saving value , I was very very impressed.

Our nearest supermarket is Aldi, & I really don't like to go there unless I have to.

Its ok for some things, cereal we always buy them because its cheap & pretty nice. One thing I really like about Aldi is that their strawberry laces are veggie! But other things, like bread you should avoid! And they generally don't have a big range, & they're not really cheaper than supermarket own brands. I personally wouldn't make the effort to go there & go to a bigger supermarket instead.
  • I'm an Aldi fan here - but not for a full shop, I must admit. Handily there's one within walking distance of work, which is good for buying salad stuff for lunches. Their cooked meats are excellent especially frikadellen and proper German bratwurst, and the pasta, cereals and cleaning materials are good value too. I'm also a HUGE fan of the anti-wrinkle cream - at £1.89 you can't go wrong! They've started doing more "loose" veg recently, which is great, and the frozen section is also good - we usually stock up on their frozen geese, ducks and seafood in time for Christmas. As ever, it depends what you want from a shop. Personally I hate Asda for everything except kids' clothes because it never seems to have in stock what I want, but it does stock a load of branded, pre-prepared and mucked-about-with stuff that other people might like... I'm an own-brand, make-it-yourself kinda gal!

It must be worth a journey on Sunday morning to pick up one of those scrummy laptops.
  • I think it is nearly identical to Lidl, I wouldn't drive a long way specifically to go there, however I would buy there if I was in the area.
