The deli counter bargains thread

Options
It strikes me that a lot of the best (and tastiest) bargains that I've had at the supermarkets have been at the deli counters....either by way of special offers or as reduced items.

I want to start a thread that identifies good special offers at deli counters.

I'll start it off with a good special offer thats on at Sainsbury's at the moment....almost all of the speciality dried and cured sausages are on special at 69p per 100g just now...it's a really good reduction. I would suggest going for the French saucisson sec...absolutely delicious.

What's the point in buying packs of water-injected, chopped and shaped ham, turkey etc at a higher price when you can have genuine, French dry-cured sausage?

Anyone else spotted any good offers at the deli counters?

  • Personally I will not buy anything from a Supermarket Deli counter after I saw a TV documetary where the staff kept putting the same food out again and again day after day. They also 'partial cooked' the raw meat when they cut it on the slicer, which made it a bit lethal to eat. They then cut up some raw meat on the same slicer. No one knew the dates on the food. Have you ever seen dates on the Deli counter? With staff turnover, who knows how long the stuff has been out.

I like my food packages with dates on it. I will buy from a Deli in small shops and the local butcher etc., Just don't like supermarkets.

They often have a mixture of offcuts of ham/chicken etc. which are bits that have been sliced too thickly or little bits that have fallen off previous slices. In Morrison's they sell it for 32p for 100g. It's cheaper than the pouches of cat food that my cat insists on eating but you could easily use it for sandwiches or to put into soups. :)
