Help - Need an Ipod Nano and know nothing!

My eleven year old son wants an ipod nano for Christmas and having read all the threads here and looked at the Apple website I think I have concluded that I need a black one, should get a case for it and probably get it engraved.
I am left with the question of 2gb or 4gb - any advice? I guess if I can afford it bigger is better?
Perhaps most importantly would anyone be able to tell me please which websites have the best deals at the moment?
Finally - is there an unbreakable version? My son referred to a friend with a 'bullet'? (he was talking about Ipod nanos at the time!) Does that mean anything to anyone?
Many thanks for any advice.

  • Hi,
Well I have a 20gig white 4gen iPod. It seems to be the screen that gets scratches on it the most if not protected by a case (and there are plenty out there) check out https://www.cancomuk.com - they sell macs and have an ishop. Loads in there. My ipod has around 4gb of songs on at present - thats around 1500 songs and 5 days of continuous play!!!

If its for the gym, bus, walk to school etc the smaller one will be fine. Be careful of the earlier models though as they had problems with there colour screens breaking - make sure you get new stock which will be an updated model. That is deffo work checking before buying.

Personal engraving looks great unless they want to sell on ebay say sometime later! Sound sbad I know but is always worth thinking about!

    HTH... :j

    Thanks that's very helpful.
Any ideas on price and where these are cheapest at the moment?
    Many thanks.

As it's for your son, I assume he's at school - in which case you should be able to order through the Apple Store For Education. You can pick up bits and bobs for it which are 'official' Apple products, although apparently there are plenty more decent (and cheaper!) aftermarket ones.

I've just bought a 2Gb Nano through there which was delivered within 3 days to my school (only because I work there, I could've had it delivered to home as well!) for around £128. I think the 4Gb are £146. My main reason for buying straight from Apple was mostly because I wanted the ease in the event of any warranty issues - it'll be straight back to Apple rather than through a reseller!

I'd be interested to hear what any other Nano owners use in terms of cases and screen protectors - as I'm looking to buy some myself.

you could buy it from boots on there points evenings. you get 1200 points (£12) back for every £50 spend.
  • The screen scratches easily, so it is a great idea to get a cover. It may be a good idea to have something personal engraved on the ipod so that it is clear that the ipod belongs to your son. This will make a little more difficult for one of his classmates to 'borrow' it on a permanent basis.

I agree with Boots being the best price at the moment, a friend of mine recently purchased an ipod and the best price we could find was through boots via points.
