I had a letter today for a debt which was from about 1997 ish I haven't heard anything from them since 1999, I have moved twice, but have always been on the electoral register, they state in the letter that the debt wont go away, but I thought after 7 years it would be written off by law? are they just trying it on seeing if someone will bite?

After 6 years of no contact, no payment and no acknowledgement of the monies owed it will become Statute Barred. That means they cannot pursue you through the courts. They can still kindly ask you for it and you can kindly say no;) After all you will still owe them the money and always will but they will never be able to force you to pay it through the English Legal System.

ps I have had several try this in court against me. The judge found it rather 'amusing' and my defence stood up very well.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
Just ignore the letter altogether. Do not write or phone them. Do not speak to them.
