Rebuilding credit history

Was just reading Martins advice on how to rebuild your credit history and one way suggested is to get a credit card which you make a small purchase on and pay off every month on time.

I know I will need to do something to repair my history as we have a bad past with lots of missed payments etc etc.

My question is when do you take out this card?

We are now in control of our debts, payments being made etc and where possible overpayments.

So do you get it now to start building or do I wait till I am debt free which may well be another couple of years?
