Was just gonna order a £27 text book. Think I'll wait a couple of days now.

It's not a great deal in my view - for a start they force you to sign up to a Waterstones card so they can send you details of offers etc at an alarmingly frequent rate. Secondly, the offer only lasts a short time, and admittedly it's the start of the academic year but often I'm not sure which textbooks work best for me and will get them out the library first before using Christmas money to make purchases. Also, despite not being part of NUS Extra (as far as I am aware, list of NUS Extra discounts is here - http://www.nus.org.uk/en/NUS-Extra/Discounts/) they still demand to see an NUS card before they'll give you the discount. My Uni (Glasgow) isn't afilliated and as such I was refused the discount. As far as I was aware it was illegal to make an offer available to certain groups of students and not others (except the NUS Extra offers which the NUS specifically negotiated for their members). I'm sure there will be people out there who know more about this than me and will be able to enlighten me, but long story short - you won't get the discount unless your institution is NUS affiliated.
Having said all that, if you are affiliated, then it's a useful 10% to save!
If you're buying online, make sure you have your NUS Number, Matric Number, Institution UCAS Code and Course UCAS Code to hand (I wish I was joking...) before you order.
Incidentally, when I was refused discount in Waterstones it was the 3rd time in a week I had been refused discount - the other two being Showcase Cinema and JJB Sports - on the grounds that my Uni isn't affiliated with the NUS.0 -
A friend of mine had a similar problem at Waterstones - you only get the discount if you have their own card. A student card is not sufficient. But they never seem to have any of their own cards either!
Have many other people had this problem? I'd be very interested to hear about it.
Thanks.
