100th birthday cake ideas

I've been asked to make a cake for my gran's 100th b'day party on the 13th. Go Gran:j

I'm a bit stuck for ideas. I need something;
1) Easy to transport in a car from Worcester to Brum. So no delicate decoration -I'm no cake decorator anyway,
2) Celebratory and special -ie not just a sponge cake
3) Serves about 17 -small pieces are fine

The only thing I've come up with so far is a repeat of the one I did for her 90th -a rich fruit cake, marzipanned and iced with royal icing roughed up (like snow). I finished it off with a tiny posy of flowers and a gold candle in the centre. It looked fab and went down well. Taste is really the main thing as Gran is almost blind, but something to impress the rest of the family would be good.

Anyone any ideas or shall I go for the fruitcake idea again?

  • Go Gran indeed :j It's great to have longevity genes in your family :T

    I posted on a thread earlier in the year - how about a tower of muffins :confused: Your speciality ;) you can arrange them when you get there, so no transport issues. A cake decorating shop near me has muffin cases in gold and silver, and gold and silver decorations (including sugar almonds). Not cheap, but worth it for a special occasion.

    Now that is a great idea PP:T . I might invest in one of those cupcake holder things to display them on. I could do chocolate ones and ice with choc ganache once I'm at my mum's and top with a gold almonds:think:

    Gran is my Dad's ma (I don't think he expected to get to 71 and still have his ma around), but my mum has an aunt who will be 99 in October and she's in better nick than my Gran despite living on convenience food. So longevity genes on both sides of my family:j
  • Blimey those cupcake stands are about £30! I still love the idea though but I've remembered an orange and ginger cake I made for Christmas last year or the one before that was delicious. I also remembered that one of my gran's favourite things is chocolate ginger so I'm going to make that and cover it with choc ganache. Should be easy to transport and I can make the cake in advance.

    Thanks for your ideas PP and BJB;)

    Hey Thriftlady - sadly I'm no great shakes at cake making, but many congrats to your Gran!
    I'm sure that whatever you do will be very much appreciated!

    Second the recipe request PP...would be nice for Christmas this year as I am not making a fruit one anymore...I end up eating the whole thing myself.

    Happy birthday to GrannyThrift to morrow...what a wonderful age....my godmother, who is the last survivor of six in my mother's family, was 99 in August, so we are hoping that she will make the century...wonder if I have carried the genes.

  • Go Grannythrift! Congratulations to her and many happy returns :D

    Perhaps some edible gold leaf would be a good decoration on the chocolate ginger cake? Okay, a little indulgent but for such a special occasion..
