Calling all SINGLE people...

Firstly sorry if this thread is in the wrong place but being a debt free wanabee I thought I’d start here.
If you are a single person like me trying to pay off your debts, I could really use your advise:
I have been single now for five years (there is nothing wrong with me – honest). I’m in no way desperate to find a man certainly don’t believe you have to have a partner to be married, but after several years of ambling along thinking that fate will intervene and find me the perfect person when I least expect it – it hasn’t. So I’ve decided I’d like to be a bit more proactive in my search.
The reason I am posting this thread is that I have been looking into various options recently (online dating, speed dating, singles nights etc) and have discovered how expensive all this dating malarkey actually is! Personally being quite heavily in debt and really trying to pay it off means I simply cannot afford to spend £15-20 a month on an online dating site or £25-30 on one evening spent speed dating, especially when you’re not even sure it’ll be worth while.
So basically I’m after a bit of input/advice from other people in a similar situation. Do you think debt is an obstacle to finding love, after all going out on dates in general can be expensive? Have you tried any money saving/free ways of meeting new people? Do you have any advice on ways to make dating cheaper yet still enjoyable? Are you just happy being single and concentrating on clearing the dreaded debt or are you still hoping to meet someone?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Rebecca

Great post.
I am sorry that I cannot offer any information on free to use dating sites (I am sure you wouldn't want to use the one I have been a member of!) but I know that there are some out there.
I'm happily with a lovely guy now, whom I met away from the internet, and I am still in debt. For a long time I thought that debt was preventing me from meeting a new guy, but it was more the case for me that it was my head telling me that debt was stopping me from finding love rather than the debt itself...if you see what I mean. Obviously debt can be restricting but it shouldn't close of every avenue of life.I'm the only gay in this forum

My bf of one year and I split a few months ago. During that time together I could barely make a dent in my overdraft/credit card/bank loan and was getting worried (although luckily I was making at least minimum payments so my credit score is intact). In just a few months I have cleared the lot. The only annoying thing remaining is my phone contract I took out - I needed all the minutes and texts at the time but now that my phone usage has dropped dramatically, I'm tied into my price plan until January.
It's almost putting me off starting dating again as I've turned into the biggest scrooge in the world with my money - I'm going to max out my ISA this month and NOTHING is going to stop me! But I'd like to start dating again, would be nice...Trying to only spend money when I absolutely have to.Barclaycard: £4559-1500 = £3059 (Will have £900 to add to that end of September)Loan from Friend = £20000
