You should apply to write soundbites for David Cameron or Nick Clegg at PM question time.
You're not Vince Cable, are you? This is exactly the sort of quotation I'd expect him to come up with.
The more I hear Vince Cable the more I like him. Maybe this is finally the chance the Lib Dems have been waiting for. If not to win the next general election, but at least become the primary oposition.
I can however confirm that I am not Vince Cable, nor do I have any allegance to any party.... I am a political atheist. If there is such a thing
This soundbite job tho, how much would that pay? Enough to buy me a house?0 -

3) the government is going to want their money back in 5 years - if house prices haven't recovered enough then people will get reposessed for it - after all 30% of an existing property new build flat is around 50k in this area - first time buyers will buy higher because they can afford the smaller mortgage without thinking about 5 years time when they have to pay it back
Even if (big if) prices have recovered, unless you sell that isn't going to help you find that £50K you need.
All this scheme is doing is putting off a chunk of the money temporarily, not getting rid of it.
It's just yet more debt, the government seem convinced that people can borrow their way clear.

BTW, 'everybody' has never had the chance to own their own home, nor will they.
nor should everybody have the chance to own their own home. buying a house isn't a human right. some people cannot afford it. the government's job is to provide housing for people who cannot afford to pay for it themselves, not to dream up schemes to encourage people to buy properties they can't actually afford to buy. all that can do is create an artificial market.0 -

Cheaper to get people into more debt buying their own homes then build or buy more state owned homes though.
Of course we did have plenty but most were all flogged off years ago and the money long since spent elsewhere.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
What really winds me up about all this is why we are in this mess in the first place.... and no one seems to look at the bigger picture...
House prices went up massively because banks started lending stupid amounts vs. peoples earnings, didn't it always used to be around 3.5x.... the banks lending 5,6,7+ were artificially inflating house prices... but this wasn't sustainable.
SOOO what do the goverment now want but to kickstart this massive snowball somemore this time using 1st time buyers as the fodder.... why kickstart something that is already to big, it's surely just gonna create the whole problem again in a year or two.... Perhaps thats the thinking so that when Labour are booted out the Conservatives will have to hold the can.
The average wage in this country doesn't fit into current house prices so kickstarting the market now is doomed to fail imo
House prices need to fall back inline to about 3.5x Average wage unless people are happy to borrow many muliples of the wage.....
Also it sends out the message that people need not bother saving up deposits anymore.....0 -

However, I believe there ar mor Labour/banana comparisons available...
I'd suggest Labour are as crooked as bananas too. And as yellow (as in lack of bravery not political meaning). And as slippery.
In the interests of PC and my campaign for fairness to bananas I think you could amend your quote to:
"I'd suggest Labour are more crooked than bananas too. And more yellow (as in lack of bravery not political meaning). And more slippery"!

Unfortunately politicians seem to have less (moral) fibre than bananas, be far less sweet (once you've removed the very deceptive outer skin) and not anywhere near as good for you!“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

The UK housing market is like an old man dying in hospital with 'Do Not Resuscitate' written above the bed, but Gordon Brown is trying to force cough sweets down his throat in the hope it might revive him...
Just give up, Mr Brown. Let the market die in dignity. It will be a tough few years for the economy but we can't solve our economic problems by borrowing anymore.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -

In other words, these measures are the herceptin of the housing market.
How effective they are might well be a postcode lottery, meanwhile people die of cancer as money that could have been better spent is spent on this and prudent, every day normal 'decent' people continue to suffer
