Walked out of work - is there anything I can do?

  • hmmm Im not convinced tbh

We see this far too often on here, middle aged staff in entry level positions who act above themselves then moan when they dont settle.

Not getting you tea - unpleasant but not bullying, do you ever get them tea? have you ever asked for some? have you ever asked them? maybe they just dont think you drink it

Re the timesheets a bit more serious but you havent raised a grievance and I would assume you have no proof

The fact you keep going to the MD as opposed to your line manager is a deciding factor to me, people who do this imo have an opinion above themselves and are looking to cause trouble for the manager, I would suggest you are as guilty here as anyone else for the tension

Annando that is very uplifting! Thanks for that. Please let me know how they take his last minute announcement. LOL

Will let you know... not long to go now... :D :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::D
OH goes to sleep thinking about it, imagining what their faces will be like... we keep wondering who will take up his role as newbie is not experienced enough and none of the managers are qualified!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I should also add that OH was really mad when incompetent newbie was offered loads of new courses etc... as he really has (had) the feeling that newbie was being groomed to take OH's place in near future... Plus because newbie is away so much OH has (had) much more work then usual and kept doing 10 hour days...

I really wish I was a fly or some kind of insect / bug to see their faces when OH tells them...

    interesting...

if your are experiencing problems at work and your manager is not on your side or is the one u have beef with, who do u go to?? right to the top! you cannot argue with the MD, if they dont listen then at least they know of what you've complained about. if u put a grievance to them it's more 'official' and bring things out in the 'open'. interesting that u find that is 'causing trouble'. too many people keep schtum over fear of 'causing trouble'. they shoulda thought of that before they proceeded with such actions against another.

I don't agree with this either. Quite a few years ago now I felt I was being bullied by a co worker. I knew 100% that going to my line manager would have no effect what so ever (other than make the situation worse) so I went straight to the top. (or as close to the top as I could get on that day)
It was sorted out and I was moved onto another team the following day.
Some line managers just aren't cut out to do the job.
This was proved when the company used the excuse of downsizing and she was one of the first to go and someone else put in her place.

  • If you have decided not to return, best thing you can do is go to your GP and get a sick note [preferably signed off with 'work related stress'!] This covers you all ways and gives you time to decide what you need to do. You can still actively seek work while signed off. It also means you are not in any kind of breach of contract and won't have any chance of repercussions from your employers. If you explain you walked out a couple of days ago, your GP might even backdate the note.

Try not to let this affect you too much and reduce any risk by getting that doctors note for the 'now'....treat it as life experience and try to move on to pastures new...who knows, you might just land that dream job!! You have had some fantastic advice and information here and regardless of what you do...Good luck...your future is all yours!! Live for tomorrow, not yesterday!!

an the other hand maybe there are more real cases of bullying against someone who is middle aged and in an entry level position

bullies tend to pick on people who are different from the norm, or who they perceive as weak, middle-aged and in an entry level position could fit both of those, since most entry level people are younger so its against the nrom to be middle-aged and entry level, and weak since entry-level people have less rights

I can totally empathise with you. I walked out my job two weeks ago due to finding some really nasty personal emails from my boss about me and a fragile situation.

I have been to lots of agencies and all seem dissinterested when I explain that I left without notice. Luckily my old work have agreed to pay me 3 months notice so that takes the pressure off.

I know its hard as you are torn between what is the right thing to do and what will keep you sane.

I really hope it all works out for you

  • I walked today too. Started a new job in November, well, it was back to an old employer. Unfortunately my new manager was my old manager (and he's the reason I left the last time too) ... hoped things would pan out OK, kept my head down, working away. Got passed over for days off, was given hopelessly optimistic targets (unlike the rest of the staff - more experience than them, you see), pulled up for minor mistakes in front of everyone while catastrophic mistakes made by friends of the manager were conveniently forgotton about.

All came to a head in June when my partner & I split up, I got refused any time off to find alternative accomodation or to move house (meanwhile the managers friend got a week off at short notice to go play golf) ... was kipping on a friends floor & living out of binbags all for the wont of being able to get to a letting agents ... then when I did find a new house I was only in there a week when I had a gas leak ... phoned in & explained what was happening, the gas board were racing to the house ... and my manager said I couldn't get any time off for that either (like what was I supposed to do ? just let the house explode ?)

So I used the company grievance procedure, that's no soft option either, everyone in management then knows your business & you suddenly find you've passed from being a valued employee to nothing but a bloody troublemaker. My manager interviewed me about the grievance (gas leak) then said his decision stood & I had to take it even further up the management route ... which I did yesterday. Obviously that ruffles a few feathers, now this morning I got pulled up for answering my mobile phone in work time (everyone else does), then I got told off at lunchtime for eating at my desk (everyone else does) ... now I know everyone else doing it doesn't make it right ... but everyone else gets away with it, heck even the manager does it.

So I just decided enough was enough.

And walked. You've gotta have some dignity left, you know, even if it means being skint until the next job comes along.

Yes I am right there with you.

I am finding it so hard to find another job as it seems like the whole world is looking. I am considering to taking a few advanced computer courses up my chances. I hope you have better luck than me
