Vacuum Cleaner recommendations please

Our 10 year old Dyson is dead. Burnt out motor. We are fed up with lugging it around the house and are also fed up with the dust cyclinder dropping the contents back on the floor when we come to empty it. We are therefore in the market for a new vacuum cleaner.
Not sure whether to go for another bagless cleaner. Basically we want a reliable, relatively light cleaner that does the job effectively. I don't think Dysons are all they are cracked up to be so willing to change to another brand. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Steve

A Miele cylinder with bags (which last for ages) with a decent cordless for doing the stairs and small cleans. This is the combination that I've found the best (and I've tried most if not all).
A Miele costs about £100. If you have a lot of area on one level to vac, and a decent sized cupboard to store the cleaner, then a Henry is another good choice.
I switched back from bagless, because I found I couldn't stand looking at the muck stored therein and emptied the vac every time I used it, which just adds to your work. Also it's nice just plucking the bag out and binning it with no dust etc flying about.0 -
Miele. Mine was expensive but works equally on limestone, wood and carpet (incl stairs). I'm sure you can get cheaper models..... http://www.johnlewis.com/230402971/Product.aspx0

Meile all the way, you can get a decent one for about £100, but having a dyson before I would never get another one, they are rubbish after a year.. I have had this one for 5 years now and is still as good as day one...*Don't let the b******s get you down

Miele or Sebo. I have a Sebo Premium K, love it!0

Thanks for your replies. Miele it is! There will be a cheer in our house when the Dyson is taken to the tip!

Today my Miele S390 has broken.
It simply stopped working.
So I came here to see if there are some good recommendations on buying a new one.
But what I see is Miele???
Frankly I am dissappointed with this one. It had good looks but not functionwise.
So it would be nice if someone could advise some poverfull hoover to clean the carpet (that is all over appartment).
And I am looking for the best price and quality deal.
As we got married just a month ago, the budget is tight so it would be nice to hear of something that we could afford.
Thank you all!0 -
I have heard very good recommendations for Henrys - if your appartment is all on one level I would recommend a Henry. They last forever and are very powerful - we had one at a flat I shared and it used to clean carpet and laminate really thoroughly!0
