Tutor/Typist

Options
Dear all, I need some urgent advice as I am struggling with my finances at the moment. I am studying with the OU (BA Humanities) and have over a year left before I finish the course.

I am looking to work from home to earn some money and I have two options at the moment.

1) Tutoring (Primary school children, most likely 11+)
2) Typing (Audio + medical audio etc)

I can go to college part time to study audio typing and get a qualification. Will I be able to register with transcription companies with qualifications only? (I do have admin experience)

If I want to tutor, I don't have a degree yet but I have done A Levels. Could I help children with 11+ in English? I have done A'Level English Lit but don't know if I can really advertise to help with 11+ without a degree or teaching qualification. I know I won't be able to charge much either due to my lack of post A'Level qualifications.

Can someone give me some advice on this issue. Which option is good or what are the prospects etc.. It would be a great help!

Thank you...

  • I am sure some of you folks can advise me. I really need some advice please.
  • I think you will find most people who are after a tutor will probably require a qualified teacher of some description - I could be wrong but if it was me I wouldn't pay someone to tutor my kids without the necessary qualifications or CRB checks.

MY brother is a maths teacher and does some tutoring. You could try asking your old teachers my brother always has more people wanting tutoring than he can manage. It could be the same with your teachers, if so they might stear some work your way

    On the typing side -

the medical audio doesn't sound as likely to me for home working - I imagine that a lot, if not all, of medical audio requires patient information and there are problems with patient confidentiality if patient data leaves medical premises. Even sending data with a password is not sufficient, it needs to be properly encrypted.

Other typing work is a bit more of a possibility. You need to locate local companies who have a requirement for volume audio typing. Solicitors come to mind.
  • I am able to get a CRB check via a voluntary organisation I work for a few hours a week. However, my worry is mainly that I haven't completed my degreee yet (I do have A'Levels) so that may go against me. What do you guys think?

Hmm, I like the audio typing idea Littlevoice. Thank you for the suggestion. I would probably have to train as a legal audio typist in that case.
  • Hi

I am a teacher and Im sorry to say that I think without the relevant qualifications and knowledge of the test and curriculum you would struggle to find people who would be interested. Also I think it would be unwise to advertise to work with children without a CRB form. People are very funny about this sort of thing! Also with extended schools, a lot of schools will be offering support to children doing the 11+ as this will help their figures, so effectively they would be killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

Sorry I know that will have put the dampeners on your ideas.
    Current mortgage 133k

As a teacher I completely agree with this. Your only option that I can see is maybe tutoring family or friends children.

Hello Aroundtheworld - I'm a teacher as well, and I'm afraid I agree with Country Girl, that you'll struggle to get "tutees" without a teaching qualification (I struggle as no-one where I live wants to study at school where it's free- let alone PAY for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!):rotfl:
On a more positive note - you could advertise (Gumtree?) as a kind of proofreader/editor - as an undergrad your written skills are bound to be very good and I did once check a report through with a chap who responded to one of my tutor ads - and he was happy to pay £30 for one and a half hour's work on his manuscript - (and he was going through it with me at the time - not that I recommend that!).
Perhaps you could also write/edit business ads etc for local businesses or (and this may be difficult if you don't have the free time) apply for work at local schools as a Teaching Assistant - there seem to be quite a few vacancies round here for that (even though it is the start of a new school year) and your level of education would more than qualify you for such a post. They are sometimes part-time but the full time pay is around £13000 per annum. Bonus is that you have school hols and early finishing days! Look on your County council website for vacancies or try the direct approach and contact the local schools - you may just be the right person at the right time!
    Hope some of that helps
    Good Luck.

I am a Medical Secretary and re audio typing, I would love to work some from home but would not be allowed to do this because of patient confidentiality etc.
  • is it difficult to get a job as a legal audio typist? I don't have any work experience in this field but i have OCR qualifications from my local college. Would I be able to apply to transcription companies or write to my local small law practices for work?
