digital camera + docking or printer.. advice pls

looking to get a digital camera for teenage daughters' birthday next week.

we're not "techie" !.. so wondered whether we should look at ones like a kodak plus "docking station" .. or think i've seen similar idea with olympus ?

i presume the idea of them is that you don't have to have a pc ?

are they a good idea ? do they do a good job ?

is there any differrence in "running costs" eg paper/ink ?

what's the best product and best deals ?

help gratefully appreciated .

thanks

If you print at home on one of those stand alone printers the cost will be huge, for example the Kodak printers the cartridge and paper for 40 prints is £20 that works out at 50p per print, if you go to Boots or Tesco for example they will print off 50 photos for £5 (10p each) and 10p therafter for any extras and you can get even cheaper deals than that

If you only want to print off 1 or 2 prints then its worth doing it at home or on one of the Kodak kiosks in Boots stores.

Always look at running costs not the actually price you first buy the printer etc. it might be worth paying £30 more for a printer as replacement carts/paper etc may be alot cheaper each time
  • danos, that's really useful info...
i take it therefore that say the kodak + docking is NOT a good idea as cost is really high ..... can you give me some idea of what i should be looking for...

Do you want to use a PC at all with the camera or just standalone ?
  • deanos, really don't know ... again looking for advice and guidance.
she has a laptop ..... but i think i was looking at the ads for cameras like the kodak with docking station that appearred to be a clever idea..... but that's why i started asking questions ... and i did reckon there may be a high cost to them which you are agreeing with.

at the end of the day i want to get a decent quality camera ... that is easy to use .... then easy to get prints... as cheaply as possible.

for a teenage girl, i'd look at the tiny pentax cameras, something like the s5i. really good, 5mp, 3x optical zoom.

whatever you get though, make sure it has an optical zoom, and get her a decent sized memory card too.

Would have to disagree there of course optical zoom is a good idea but it really depends on what your daughter wants to do with the camera, is it for taking out with her all the time to take snapshots or friends for example if so then optical zoom may not be important and size might be.

It also depends on how much you want to spend on the camera and printer, if you give a rough idea it will narrow down the choices quite dramatically.

I have noticed the Pentax Opsio S40 on Amaon for £99.99
    HERE

That camera is Pictbridge enabled which means if you get a PictBridge printer you can then use the camera to control the printer without a PC for example THIS Canon printer is £46.53 and the cartridges are only £1 each HERE or only 80p each when bought in packs of 5
  • guess mainly used for pics of friends .. budget ideally to £150 ..
