I have to be honest and say that I have never, ever heard of a police officer being made redundant.
I have a very strong feeling that police officers can't be made redundant.
Part of the compensation for their not being allowed to strike....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Interesting point, I don't know, but can someone help here - do 'portable' type mortgages need to be redeemed in the same manner as normal ones, or do they simply transfer to the new property regardless of equity etc..???? Does anyone know?
They need to be re-underwritten - so the new mortgage on the new place needs to be the right LTV, credit checks OK, and income needs to meet current rules, etc. It's the rate which moves, and the early redemption penalties avoided, rather than the whole lot transferring over....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

It seems you are right. Although the squeeze still exists - and reality bites. All kinds of promises will be broken or reworked.
Maybe police officers can still be forced to take pay-cuts?
http://www.lincolnshire-pa.gov.uk/pages/viewPR.asp?ID=66PRESS RELEASE Budget Crisis For Lincolnshire Police
1 October 2007
FORCE BETWEEN A ‘ROCK AND HARD PLACE’
‘Major boost to funding is crucial or officer, staff cuts and police
station closures are inevitable.’“The stark fact is that if the money we raise locally through the police
precept through the council tax is kept below the anticipated limit of 5%, we will
have to cut the number of Lincolnshire police officers by a quarter to balance our
books. However, police officers are appointed by the Crown and they cannot be
made redundant and natural wastage through retirements and resignations
would take too long to generate the kind of savings which we would be forced to
make,” she says.
“This means that 364 members of police staff would have to be made redundant.
That would mean bringing in 364 police officers from front line duties to cover
their roles – and with our current strength at 1163 our position would be
perilous. Support staff redundancies would also incur costs which would
effectively increase our budget deficit,” she says.Mrs Crowe says Lincolnshire’s funding crisis is historic. Without a minimum
increase in our overall budget of £7m next year the Police Authority will not
be able to meet its statutory duty and present a balanced budget. This
substantial deficit will expand to £14m by 2010 if nothing is done. In addition,
changes to the funding formula could see Lincolnshire losing up to an additional
£3.6 million. “Lincolnshire has a history of under-funding from the Government
and the Police Authority’s desire to limit the strain on the local taxpayer has led
to ten years of setting low police precepts. As a result our budgetary situation is
now untenable. The time has come for radical action.”0 -

Leave it out dop. You wont be happy until the last person in the country loses their job. Are you unemployed yourself, and praying unemployment goes sky high to make yoursel feel better?
On a postive note, we got our annual pay rise of 3.5% agreed yesturday - back dated to April of course. Plus my performance increase of 4% which happened in April - so 7.5% this year - im happy.0 -

Exactly!
What if it was the other way round, the rent is £100 and the mortgage interest is £400? (Just re-using your numbers, but the point is to illustrate that mortgage interest is higher than rents in most places these days).
Would you still buy?0 -

Didn't they have a very well behaved demo in London a while back? I really really wanted them to met by a load of tough ex-miner's, riding pit ponies through their lines.neverdespairgirl wrote: »I have a very strong feeling that police officers can't be made redundant.
