Where to live in West Yorkshire for trains

Hi,

Me and my boyfriend are looking to buy a house in west Yorkshire with good connnections to manchester as well as Bradford. We don't have a lot of money to spend and it needs to be near a train as we do not drive. We have checked out halifax, but it seemed a bit rough. Where is there a nice place to live around that area..with just some sound people, a nice restaurant or two and a few pubs...and of course it has to be on a trainline. Any ideas?

  • Hi wanderer_yorkshire, welcome to the board! Have you thought of Wakefield? Its 10 miles away from Leeds, lively nightlife and a good mix of house prices. There is a train station in the city, hospitals, good shopping, open countryside, natives are friendly, definitely loads of pubs, everything really. Might be a bit cheaper than obvious places like Leeds.

  • Hi,

No have not considered wakefield yet actually thanks for the tipp! :) Yes Leeds is a bit pricey unless you wanna live in the rough parts which i just wouldn't be comfortable with. Will definitely check out Wakefield! Thank you...so taking from your username that you are also looking forward to the start of the new episodes on wednesday :)
  • I don't live in Wakefield but my sister does and I have visited her many times, I'd recommend Wakefield also, even the bus routed are great and the trains even more regular. She lives in Ryhill which is a lovely place to live, I hope this is useful and you find somewhere you really like. Good Luck!

    Wanderer you have a PM.
  • Depends where you live in Wakefield as you will have to change at Leeds. So you don't want to be far from the train station. Commuting to Bradford from a village outside Wakefield took me 1.5 hours.

It might be worth rethinking Halifax - there are some lovely areas around there Hebden Bridge, for example, has a station and has good links to both sides of the Pennines. You might also want to look at the Huddersfield area as well. Both would be well placed for both Bradford and the rail links for Bradford.

You could also look at the areas between Leeds and Bradford - I know some Manchester trains stop at Pudsey. There are some nice places nearby like Calverley - although I suspect that is a bit pricey now. Why not look at the West Yorkshire stops on the main line between Manchester and Bradford. If you go on the national rail (I think) site, you can download route maps.
