You might still be ok. Our postman ignores all customs stickers and just puts the parcels through the letter box anyway.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

I know its a bit hit and miss with the customs, sometimes I get charged sometimes I don't. Based on the fact I have bought $40 worth of stuff, does anyone know what the maximum I will be charged?

My bubble is intact. I've had maybe 30 deliveries of approximately this value from abroad, mostly the States and none have been charged. I did hear that the postage is included in the allowance but they don't collect when only very minimal and delivery charges aren't mentioned on the HM rev and customs site:Sorry to burst your bubble , but the customs limit is £18 including postage costs.Don't know how much postage you paid, but I think you've gone over the limit.

The rule is the goods have to be less than £18. If over that then you are liable for tax on the item AND the postage.
So, if the total came to £25 - but a breakdown of £17.99 for item, £7.01 postage then you wouldnt pay. If it was £18.01 item and £6.99 postage you would be liable.
You can get the duty back from them if they've incorrectly charged - sending them a copy of the invoice etc. They promised the earth...and delivered mud. Technically though it did meet the spec.0
