Options
Iam a recycle addict.so when i use the the gully way by us, i collect all the empty cans and recycle them. I know that the council get paid to recycle these so why shouldnt I.
My question is can I take them to a scrap yard and cash them in and if so in what quantities i.e is a bin bag full worth taking at one time?
can i also take aluminium food containers ?
Please can you tell me as i now have 3 bin bags full.
Its not how far you fall but how high you bounce back that matters

Hey, I just asked my Dad for you, who's been dealing with (and has been friends with) a scrap man for years. He says that they do take aluminium, but he isn't sure how much you'd get for it. If I were you I'd take a bag down just to see. Or find a contact number and ring them? I think it might change scrap man.. to scrap man on what they take?
  • last time i checked scrap metal was £350 per ton , most scrap metal merchants will let you drive in
  • Hi there
Having worked in the scrap metal business myself, I would phone around merchants in your local area and ask for the price per kilo, then try and weigh a bag at home to give you an idea, but try to keep steel cans apart from aluminium, but I do not think you will get much for a bag, there again depends on the price £1 is better than 50p
    Regards
  • one of my local binmen saved me the time of putting all my cans in the recycle bins and asked me if I had an old washing machine as he takes them to the local scrap yard for cash. I asked him how much he gets for it:confused: He said he has a volvo estate car and he goes when he has a car full. It is variable due to weight but he usually gets about £30 for a load.
  • A friend gets £14.00 for two tied binbags of aluminium cans. The cans are squashed flat in the bag. It all adds up at the end of the year!

I have also been told by another friend that he gets £14.00 for FOUR binbags of cans!

However much you get it all adds up at the end of the year. I've been collecting loads lately during my leafletting round from the rough end of my town. I amuses me to think i am making money from litter louts.

i regularly take scrap to my local dealer and typically get around 50p a kilo for aluminium, hasnt really changed much for the last 3 years. Stainless steel is usually around 80p to £1 per kilo and copper around £2 per kilo though these fluctuate alot more than aluminium!

one word of warning though, make sure you seperate metals, as you get alot less for taking mixed metals down!

Thanks for the idea. Not much chance of doing any of that where I live but I'm hoping to move next month so will start collecting then. Many, many years ago my sister and I collected paper, including cardboard, but you could only trade it in by the half ton in those days. You didn't get much either! If it's still the same, you'd need plenty of room to store it. I remember what my sister's wash-house used to look like!!
  • Hi

I used to work in the recycling industry although I wasn't a scrap merchant - more's the pity given the current metals prices - anyway there are 'Cash for Cans' centres around the country. You can find somewhere local from the following website http://www.alupro.org.uk/cash for cans.htm

A fridge magnet helps sort the aluminium from steel. Or check out the label somewhere on the packaging.

You get cash from selling alu drinks cans and it also raises money for charity.

You can collect foil to sell - but make sure it's clean.
