Substituting easy bake yeast for normal yeast

I've finally got a breaadmaker! :T

Really excited and got DH to buy me some yeast. The only problem is that we now have four tins on normal, handbake dry yeast, and not the easybake recommended for breadmakers.

I made a loaf last night anyway, and it has risen perfectly, tastes great but smells a tad yeasty.

So, does anyone have any idea of how to use the normal yeast instead of the easybake?

  • Do you mean those Allinsons orange tins?

I use those all the time and they are fine. Maybe try putting a little less yeast in. I put in a slightly rounded tsp of yeast into a 1 1/2lb loaf.

This used to be the only sort of dried yeast you could buy before the easy blend stuff came to be. You had to mix it with warm water and a little sugar, when it was frothy you could add it to the flour - maybe you try that?
  • my machine recipe boook recommends this type of yeast anyway, and it is just added ontop of the flour.

I have a couple of these tins and have just bought myself a pestle and mortar from tescos and now grind down the yeast so that it is more like powder and this seems to help a lot.

Oh fab, lots of tips, thank you!

Yes, it is the orange Allison's tins- the only ones they have on Tesco online. I'll try adding a little less and grinding it, if that doesn't work I'll give it a go by mixing it with water first.

Forever Skint, does your machine recommend to add it on top? Mine says to put it at the bottom, under the flour...

Mine said add the yeast on top of the flour.

If you are going to use the timer, you must add the yeast on top of the flour. It needs to be kept dry until it's ready to work. If you add the yeast on the bottom, it'll start working instantly, then the bread won't rise properly when your machine timer switches it on!
Here I go again on my own....

My Panasonic says to put the yeast in first, then flour, milk powder, salt etc and the water last of all. Perfect results every time and I only use half a teaspoon of yeast for most large loaves. You have to keep the yeast away from the liquid whether it's at the top or the bottom doesn't matter but I don't think you should mix yeast and water before adding.

I wonder if they take things off-line if it temporarily goes out of stock then as they definitely sell the Allinson easy bake yeast online. It looks like this ...

... and is the same size and price as the orange tin version - 125g @ 99p

They also sell their own brand in foil sachets, but obviously this works out more expensive ;)

They don't sell this in my Tescos so maybe it's only in larger branches. I think when you log in to Tesco online it shows what's availabe in your local store so some of us will see it, some won't.
