I have seen an add in the paper today for life models. Its for between 1.5 and 3 hours and its £11 per hour.

Has anyone done this before? How do you just sit there for a few hours doing nothing?

Is the amount they are offering any good?

It sounds a reasonable rate. As I understand, you do get regular 'breaks', but need to be capable of holding a pose for up to 20 mins. This probably isn't a job for someone who is easily bored, but I can disappear into my own thoughts for ages, so I'd be ok.

I worked as a life model for about a year in addition to my normal work. I loved it but OMG never think it is easy. You ache in places you never knew you had and you do need to be capable of amusing yourself in your own mind. Take an IPod or something with you, some classes don't mind you using one as long as it doesn't interfere with the posing.

I posed for just two groups so got to know them all really well and then moved on to other classes as people recommended me and I got more work than I needed!

Oh and don't be shy if you are a larger lady, so am I and they LOVED it. Most life models do not have curves and all the classes I went to raved about how nice it was to have curves and shadows. I actually gained a great deal more confidence about my body from doing this.

I will say again - it IS hard work and you really do ache the next day. Make sure you have a break at least every 45mins to stretch. Discuss the breaks with the teacher of the class first so she/he knows what you want and vice versa.

Thanks for the advice Diva, I've been looking into doing this recently but I'm finding it hard to sort the pervs from the actual art classes

I did this for a while too although I did more period costume than nude. Hopping round with cramp is frowned upon and keeping the same facial position for 45 minutes can be agony. Imagine peering whisfully over your shoulder and you'll get the idea. I did enjoy it and I was given a few sketches to keep. Most of it is very tastefully done and you don't feel at all exposed. If you're not happy with something say before you do it and before the class start to draw and they will usully adapt things a little. You do get bored out of your mind though.

Im still not sure if its something I would like to do. Diva, thanks for the reply. I am a size 16 and big chested which may go in my favour. I will keep you posted.
