Used Asda yeast - bread like a brick

Hi,
Has anyone used Asda yeast (the dried stuff) in their breadmaker? I've just used it for the first time and the bread looks like a brick. I've always used hovis dried yeast in the past but my local asda only had their own make in stock.

OH uses it all the time, either Asda or Tesco own brand and never has a problem but we don't have a breadmaker (only OH :rotfl: ) and make it by hand.
  • Hi Skintlass,

I use Asda's yeast and a Morphy Richards bread maker. Have to say my bread is yum. Don't know if it is the yeast or breadmaker receipes but the bread I make is quite dense, but we like it.

I used the same amount as I normally do of hovis - that is to say 1.5tsp for a loaf made with 400g flour - can you get different strengths of yeast so you need more to get the same effect?

That sounds plenty - if it's not out of date, it sounds like it might have been stored incorrectly by Asda at too high a temp - I would take the rest of the packets back and complain

I have been using Asda fast action dried yeast for quite a while, and have been very impressed with the results in my Panny.I use a teaspoonful with 500g of Lidl bread flour and get a really light, tasty loaf. I'm with Thriftmonster on this one, take the packet back and complain!

I took it back and got a refund. I didn't want another pack as they were probably stored in the same way. I ended up buying much less allinsons yeast for slightly more money (only other option). Thanks for the advice peeps.

Instead of the little packs I buy the Doves Farm little brick for 99p and keep it in a lock n lock container - you can use just what you need and there's no faffing with the little packets.
