Advice/Tips wanted for part time work for 13 year old boy

Options
Hi all,

Not sure I'm posting this in the right place, so apologies if not!

Basically my 13yr old son is wanting to earn some extra cash (his idea, not mine - trying to save towards an expensive mobile phone he wants!)

He's tried the local shops for paper rounds however none available at the moment but he's still determined to find something.

Just wondering what the laws are with regards to hours he's allowed to work, what sort of work he's actually permitted to do and any suggestions.

Unfortunately, Saturday work between the hours of 10:30am-1:30pm are out of the question as he attends theatre training - (some of the lads when I was at school helped out on local market stalls on Saturdays).

im not too sure on the laws etc but when I was 13 I got a job in a pub kitchen, washing up. He could do that and then gradually learn the ways of the kitchen. It's not really bad for school time and he could get some overtime on holidays.

Thanks to all competition posters :T

Thanks Stimps, that's an option he could definitely look at.

    Hello,

At 13, he is allowed to work a maximum of 2 hours on a school day (only 1 hour in the morning)
2 hours maximum on a Sunday
5 Hours maximum on a Saturday (or a week day during the school holidays)

His not able to work before 7am or past 7pm

He will not be able to work during school hours on a school day.

All school aged children must have a work permit that can be obtain by phoning your local council and asking for the educational welfare office.

He must not work for more then 4 hours without a 1 hour break.

He is not allowed to be employed in any industrial undertaking, e.g Factory, Workshop, building site, or use any machinery.

Its a long list, so many employers do not offer positions to anyone of this age. Also you really should make sure that he would be covered on the employers insurance. (This is the reason many people dont employer people under 16)

Havign said that though, slice of the pie would be fine. As you wouldn't really have to worry about any of that.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.
  • How about washing cars in the local neighbourhood. Start with the neighbours you know, if they are happy, they will tell people. Put a card in the newsagents window etc etc.

My school was 12 miles away,so couldn't do paper rounds on weekdays during term times. However did lots of 'cover' paper rounds at weekends and during school holidays, when the regulars were on holiday or sick.Worth checking out and seeing if your son could go on the relief list.I also washed cars for neighbours, and looked after pets(in cages..budgies,hamsters etc)at home when the owners went on holiday.Never did leafleting myself, but that may be an option in your area.If your son is a computer whiz, may be possible to help out newbies with basic computer problems?Or,as I do,get freebies off the net and sell on Ebay!:o

I'd never thought of 'cover' paper rounds - but sounds like a great idea for him to put his name down for, as do many of your other suggestions.

freebies on ebay sounds interesting too.
