DFW under pressure

Hello there!

Help, advice and suggestions please! I have a conundrum (sp?) or two/three.

1) I am moving house at the beginning of October having just moved house at the beginning of July. How do I do this the moneysaving way? I dont own a car but hold a full licence and the move is only 1 mile (due to dispute between OH and nosey neighbours - long story will add details later).

2) I am so bored with my job, I just dont want to go to work anymore. So I want to train as a hairdresser (very unglamorous dream job I know) however all the courses I have found in the Halifax area start in September. This means that I am unlikely to get on the courses for this year. So OH has suggested that I try and get an apprenticeship in a salon.
I currently earn £16,500 so it would be quite a drop which OH says is not a problem. And I was just wondering how easy is it to get an apprenticeship?

3) OH is 6ft 5" and we are thinking of buying a little run around car, what is the smallest car that a 6ft5" guy can drive comfortably? (including motorway driving) I'm only 5ft 8" and hold a licence so am fine, but OH is only just thinking of learning to drive. (Note: Bus fares, trainfares, coach fares etc equate to running a car although the car gives us more freedom)

    hey tickle -

    1) do you know anyone with a vehicle which they would let you borrow, assuming insurance were okay? If yes, get them to call enquire about adding you to their policy for a day or two... i don't know how doable this would be, but worth asking.....
    2) well done on OH supporting you with your decision to retrain... what about asking around for saturday jobs at a hairdresser as a good way to earn extra cash and maintaining your current salary in your fulltime job.... I'm not sure how wasy it would be to get an apprenticeship... and the pay would be awful as they usually employ school leavers don't they....... What is your current job? would they support you by letting you drop a day so you were still only working equivalent of full time hours....

    3) Re the car, most cars would be okay for a tall bloke, apart from obviously small ford ka/mini etc... depends on your budget, but VW polo/renault clio/citroen saxo might all be worth looking at.... in fact anything that is local to you and in your budget is worth looking at... OH won't know how it feels unless he sits in each car, so probably best to keep an open mind.
A friend of mine has an OH who is probably about 6'4 or so, and their second car is a ford ka... he manages, but they do use the focus for motorway driving, or she drives if using the ka for any distance.....
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

hi - I work in Adult Learning.

Phone up your local FE college today. We are in the process of firming up places and people do drop out. Oddly, your local Adult Education provider (Calderdale) doesn't do hair and beauty - it's huge where I work, so you probably need to speak to the college nearest you.

Apprenticeships are possible, butlots of them are still being developed. There is going to be a new apprenticeship scheme for different age groups, starting next year I think but at the moment most local salons here take people on placement from the NVQ hairdressing course rather than on an apprenticeship.

    My OH's son is 6ft (possibly 6ft 1) and comfortably drives a Rover 200.

Start phoning your college though here

    you could get lucky.

I have also found out that Huddersfield offer an evening course so that could solve alot of problems if they have availability :D
