assistance needed

Hi all, can you help me. I am having problems paying my mortgage at the minute I spoke to Abbey and they said as I am paying Interest only there is nothing they can do - she advised that we pay maybe half of it each month until I get on my feet again. Is this ok to do i don't want my house to be repossesed!!

Shd I cancel my DD and then pay half of it by my debit card. Any advice greatly appreciated totally stressed out over it as I have never missed a payment.

Many thanks

Well you can hardly get repossessed if they suggested the idea. Just get the arrangement agreed in writing and you will be fine.

The last thing they want is for you to spiral in to a repossession situation so some sort of leeway is only to be expected. However, don't take phone agreements as the last word even though they are recorded at their end. Always in writing.

Should the worst come to the worst you will not get repossessed if you have followed provable payment agreements.

On you last reply you said it was the Abbey "call centre". If the Abbey call centre said it was raining outside I would check myself .Having has numerous experiences with them over the years I can hand on heart say they have been wrong on their assessment of my financial affairs on 90% of my queries. The staff at local branches are the only people who stop me moving as they are clued up .Speak to someone face to face and I am confident the matter will be resolved without you losing out.

    All the best

It would probably be wise to cancel the DD as you suggested and make the payments yourself each month regardless of any agreements. Otherwise I can easily see you getting an agreement for half payments for a few months but then finding their 'system' has still taken the full amount.

You will then be faced with a messy situation to try to unravel. DDs can make life easy at times but they can also turn nasty on you and incur charges upon charges running into £100s.

    Karen,

There is no point going to the branch, they will only put you on the phone to 'Debt Management' - that is the department you need to speak to. I would be surprised if a 'Call Centre' had made those arrangements with you, I would imagine that it is Debt Management that you have already spoken to. Call again, ask them to put the arrangement in writing to you and Yes, cancel your direct debit and pay over the counter or call to make a payment by debit card. This makes sure that your direct debit does not go out as normal and you are not charged any 'unpaid charges'.

Once an arrangement has been made, ALWAYS stick to it. If for some reason you can't stick to the arrangement, call Debt Management again, they are there to help.

  • Hi all,

I phoned Abbey again last night, and the lady (sorry not a call centre) put who works in the dept. that deals with people that may have problems paying their mortgage. And she confirmed that it was on my file that my dd was stopped and I would be paying an amount each month by debit card. She confirmed that their was nothing else I needed to do and not to worry as long as I am paying something it will be fine for 3 months so that;s give me a bit of leeway.

Thanks again to all who replied I know I am not the only person in the predicament but at the time you feel you are. Until I visited this website you actually find that their is a lot in the same boat.

Fingers crossed i get on my feet soon.
