Cars and BR

Been thinking about this for a couple of days now form infomation i have been told the OR will let you keep any car worth less than £2k and wouldnt be classed as an asset. With regards to SOA having just complete a full service on my car including labour it cost me around about £100. Than road tax each car is individual but usaully below a 1.5 engine size is £125 for the year above that again generally around the £200 mark (not real sure as both my cars are 1.5 and below info on tax costs available form direct gov website) Than MOT these can range dependent on work required but just for the MOT test itself its £45. So then the work required generally MOT's have an average failure cost of £100 (To have work done to pass test) again only general figure. So that takes total cost of running car for the year
Mot Test - £45
Mot Work - £100
Tax (dependent on car) - £125
Service - £100
Total £365
Per Month £30
This doesnt include outlay for things like tyres etc so you could may add some on for this
Hope this helps anyone with more knowledge about what is allowed please update.

Hi !!!!!!,
Firstly if you have a car worth £2k it's an asset and if you don't need a car you will lose that asset.
If you can prove you need a car for whatever reason you may keep the car, although if the value is excessive you may lose the car and be given adequate finances to purchase a vehicle that is suitable. It would then be down to you to make sure it was serviced MOT'd etc.
As to the value of any car they will use either Parkers or Glass's Guide. Not sure which one.

!!!!!! why have you made an idiot of yourself. You are not an idiot. An idiot is someone who does not research a situation that is going to have a very big impact on their life for a very long time to come. As far as I and other members of this board are concerned you are very sensible.

Cars are definitely a topic of guesswork - a lot depends on the individual OR. Nothing is guaranteed. Personally, unless there are very valid reasons you need the car, I wouldn't play up the expenses too much or the OR might say you can't afford the car and the money would be put to better use in an IPA. I must stress that this is my opinion only.

I have a feeling my OR tried to take my car on the basis of MOT etc payments possibly making me over the IPA allowance, even though the car is only worth about £10 (literally, it's a heap, hence highish running costs), and the fact that I *could not* get to work without it so would have had to give up my job, so there is no guarantee you will keep your car and on my grumpy OR experience I would not try and go for the higher end of payments in my SOA - however every Or is different and yours might want to see higher car running costs and allow it, so it's best just to be truthful - go over what your car has cost you the previous 12 months and just put that down.
Didn't put that to scare anyone who is worried about their car being taken by the way (I eventually got to keep mine by paying for the cherished number plates, which the OR then included the car in as he is a lazy so and so, and forgot about me until about 3 weeks before discharge :rotfl:), but want people to know the realities of BR and cars - it's total pot luck it seems!Do not feed the trolls please.0
