Is this white rice? If so then I used to have this problem too until a friend mentioned "rinsing" the rice before cooking. I put the amount of rice I want into a sieve and pour really hot water over it for about a minute letting it drain through. This washes off the gunk. Once cooked, I rinse the rice again with a little boiling water then serve. Now that I do this, my rice is nice and fluffy and light.

  • It may be that you are cooking it for too long. Try adding the white rice to plenty of already boiling water and bring back to boil. Set timer for 10 minutes. When the time is up, take off the heat and let the rice sit in the water for 3 minutes more and then strain. Works for me...

    Hi cathy,

I rinse rice as well and it's light and fluffy.

The replies on these older threads might help:

Anyone got a foolproof way of making rice?

    Help with sticky rice please

I'll merge all of these threads together later to keep all the suggestions together.

I never strain my rice. 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of cold water. Bring to the boil and then simmer until most of the water has eveaporated and rice is all but cooked. Turn off the heat and leave in pan with the lid on for 5 mins while it steams and absorbs the last of the water. Stir and rice is fluffy.

  • Cheat. Use a rice cooker. Bung in the rice after it's been rinsed in cold water, put in the water. Switch on. Leave and voila, perfect rice. :D

For two people I use 1 cup of rice and 1 1/8 cup of water and it's perfect every time. This is for basmati rice.

However, I have found that with brown rice you do need to add more water.

I was so tempted to buy a rice cooker, as I'm not a big potato eater, I tend to stick to rice or pasta, but after buying a slow cooker (love it) and a breadmaker (havent got into using it yet) I dont think I have the space for a rice cooker just yet lol

    Thank you everyone
