Token payments

Hi, ive been left with debt from an ex partner and im currently in no position to pay the £112 the cccs have advised me to pay at present, If i made token payments would this be acceptable just for the near future and what would the be the token amounts. Many Thanks Julie.

  • Hi cbrookes

Are the debts in your name or your partner's?

Token payment amounts are usually £1 while you are negotiating alternative payment amounts. Have you spoken to cccs about why you aren't able to pay? they may be able to renegotiate with your creditors if your circumstances have changed.

It is very difficult to know what the creditors would find acceptable and I think you would probably need to keep cccs informed of what you were going to do if they have already negotiated with your creditors. If you are struggling with the allowances that cccs use you may want to try one of the other fee free organisations (see the list here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/debt-help-plan#help)

Yes i was silly enough to agree to have these debts in my name i (wish i had a crystal ball at the time)! My circumstances have changed as im now in a lower paid job and have more outgoings than income. Would the cccs be able to help do you think??. Julie

YES, phone them back up asap, the longer you leave it, it just builds up and becomes far worse.

They will simply go through all your income/outgoings again and will be able to advise how much to pay.

If you are only able to pay token payments they will advise you to do this and they should send you out the relevant paperwork to send to each company.

  • I think we all wish we had one of those, oh the benefit of hindsight.

CCCS should be able to renegotiate based on your changed circumstances although if it means you have no money at all to give to creditors then it may be that a DMP isn't suitable any more in which case they will be able to advise you what you should do for the best.

Perhaps you could go undercover on the cccs website and use their debtremedy tool with your new figures and see what it recommends for you. It may not be 100% accurate but it will give you an idea of what options you might have so that you can have done a bit of thinking before you call them.
