DVD recorder/vhs combo

Hi i'm looking for one of these so i can put some of my old videos on dvd. I would quite like one with divx as well if possible but not a must.
What is best, one that records dvd r or dvd ram?

    DVD Ram is better.

    There are three formats:

    DVD-R
    DVD+R
    DVD-RAM.

DVD-RAM players will always also record on one (if not both) of the other two.

With DVD Ram you can watch programmes which are still recording - ie. "pause" live TV like Sky+.

If you already have a VCR you know you could just get a DVD recorder and connect the two together with a scart lead.

As for a good place to look, I would try:

  • Thanks. Do you know if i can play a dvd ram recording on any dvd player or does it have to be a dvd ram player?

It has to be a DVD Ram player. However, the other two can often be played on normal DVD players.

Like I say, though, DVD Ram recorders always record to the other formats too, so use DVD-R or +R for recording things you want to keep permanently and possible play on other players, and DVD Ram for doing nifty things like timeslip (pausing Eastenders while you go to the loo!).

Also, just in case you don't know:

DVD-R and DVD+R disks can only be recorded to once
DVD-RW and DVD+RW can be overwritten
  • Great advice. Thanks
  • I was asking similar on another thread, and just to let you know I found a samsung dvd-vr320 on special offer at House of Frasers for£180, with a store card. It has all the things your talking about, and good reviews!
