Tesco's tent - leaky!!!

I don't see how you can generalise like that. You don't know where they camped. I have done a quick search of weather stations and found...
The weather across cornwall varies a lot, on high ground and some coastal areas the wind that night gusted to 60 mph.
With the extremes of weather we get in this country you surely can't expect all tents to be fine when the weather we get here can flood homes, blow over lorries, blow huge ships ashore, blow the roof's off of buildings need I go on.
It's a tent, not a reinforced building.0 -
probably not a breach of the SOGA. Tents, unlike clothes, tend to specify the level of waterproofness (is that a real word?) in terms of "mm of Hydrostatic Head". A quick look on tesco.com shows some of their tents only manage 1500mm which I'd wouldn't trust in UK weather.
I've just had a brief look and with a 1500mm Hydrostatic Head with a gale force wind and very heavy rain as it was that night you'd be pretty stuffed.
The other thing is most people who I know who've gone camping say they'll have got wet at some point or other due to the weather. They seem to think it's part of the fun! I am surprised some people think it'll keep them bone dry even in bad weather. If you want that then it'll be as Dave Brooker & I stated, book a hotel!!!0 -
Andy,
This suggests that 1500mmHH tents should withstand heavy rain. The heavily leaking tent and the dodgy zip and dodgy stitching in the zipper, all on the first day the tent was ever used and within 6 months of purchase would breach SOGA. A refund or replacement tent would be expected.0 -

No because it doesn't suggest it can withstand heavy rain and wind.0 -

The OP says they are experienced campers, and that the water soaked through everything on the floor of the tent, when they removed the wet sleeping bags there was a pool of water on the floor. This sounds to me like something much worse than a few rain dampened clothes, you at least expect your sleeping bag to remain dry.0 -
Personally I wouldn't be happy camping in anything lower than 3000HT in wind and rain. On a recent trip the tent putter uppers didn't peg out and guy one end properly and my daughter's pod let in water badly - luckily that was our last morning anyway. that was a millets tent belong to my dd and I have no idea what the HH was. It's always a good idea to try out a new tent in the back garden for a bit just to check that you know how to put it up and that it's waterproof.
khyams are great but heavy and vangos are pretty good value. I have a Robens with a HH of 5000I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 20080
