I've been using a Tesco tent for the last 3 years (been to 5 festivals and 1 weekend in the lake district. Its a cheap tent less than £20 and I'm amazed that it has lasted this long. It has survived high winds, heavy rain (though it has acquired a small dripping leak) and a very drunk occupant. Given the number of these tents that Tesco have had made and sold I think you have just been unlucky. You really have nothing to lose by returning it and asking for a refund.

Maybe with your EXTENSIVE knowledge of tents and camping you could suggest some other brands of tent the OP might try rather than just nitpick as you usually do :)

    You needed to ask?

    What would keep you dry?

    In Cornwall?

    On a cliff top?

On an August bank holiday weekend?

    A hotel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, YukTim29, I guess you don't know as much about tents as I thought you did. Never mind maybe a more knowledgable person will come along and help the OP.

It was really nice to get some replies from like-minded people on that thread but I guess the Vent section wasn't the right place for that kind of comment. When I have some more time later this week I will repeat it somewhere more suitable. :)

    Thanks for asking :D

  • Hi, I would really like some advice on a good, inexpensive tent to buy.

My partner and I are going to Bestival and need something that would be able to cope with the variable weather that September in the IOW is likely to bring. We are both pretty new to the whole camping thing so any advice would be great.

    Thanks

i was the same as you and went for style over substance but in the end got both. tent was £40 reduced to £15 from argos... its that bright pink flower one. id suggest a double lined one with a porch as it locks in heat when its sunny.

steer clear from the £5-10 ones that are tiny and really thin. my mates got those ones and had sleep interuptions and left them at the festival.

It's not necessarily condensation. Tents can be leaky. And if it is leaky Tesco should at least provide some kind of compensation - I wouldn't expect more than a £20 gift card.

I wouldn't expect anything less than a replacement tent or a full refund. Or did you mean £20 ontop of a refund as real compensation? Tesco isn't very big on this idea of compensating its customers for their inconvenience and losses, so the OP should not expect that to come willingly from Tesco.

Thanks everyone for your comments and tips.

In truth it wasn't that our belongings were touching the walls but that the wind was blowing the tent so much that the outer wall was touching the innner wall thereby causing water to leak in. At one point it was also dripping from the roof of the tent and also coming through the zip bits and the front - that's why I thought that it must have been a manufacturing defect. Also at times it was almost impossible to zip the tent up without actually forcing the zip hard, and the threads had started to come away from the stiching!

What worries me the most now is I thought that I had kept the receipt and now I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I was camping in Dorset that weekend in a tent from Lidl (normally its good) but the wind was so strong that it bent the tent poles and made the outer touch the inner - thus making the tent leak slightly.

Never had rain coming through the zip though - if you had that it was because you pitched the tent the wrong way round so that the front got the direct force of the weather. With all tents really, you should get some seam sealant that protects the seams somewhat from water damage.

When folks say that getting condensation in a tent is nonsense - you do get condensation especially if it has rained the night before and if the day has been particularly hot.

Have decided that the next time I go camping I shall take my trusty Khyam tent instead because that copes better with wind and the inner is kept well away from the walls unlike cheaper tents from Tesco and Lidl.

Look on freecycle for tents..sometimes you can pick up expensive khyam tents for free (I just missed out on one the other week)
