How to ditch my tumble dryers

I LIKE scratchy towels. Sometimes I dry them on the rads so they go extra-scratchy! It's good for exfoliation.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Hi, me again
according to this link gas dryers use 9p a load and electric 34.5p a load , not sure how accurate these figures are since the recent prices rises , http://www.crosslee.co.uk/gas.html
Gas dryers do cost more but having said that mine was 50 quid from the free ads about 3 years ago. Then there is the cost of instalation depending on how near the gas supply is . They usually plug into a bayonet on a gas flexi hose just like a cooker and need venting outside in most circumstances.
So , do your sums and take your pick.On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0 -
why not invest in a creelbye hoo0

I have never owned a tumble dryer and I don't think I would ever use one I hang the washing on the line or on the airer and I've never had a problem. Mind you I do use non-bio as I think the bio is a bit harsh
Chuck the dryer out what do you think folk did before they were invented .0 -
I have also never owned a tumble dryer. Personally I cannot stand the smell of them.
To make the towels less scratchy you can quickly iron them and they will be soft again, but of course this is a lot more ironing to do.0 -
Well I have a drier and couldn't be without it - I don't use it if I can dry things on the line, but this time of year it enables me to get stuff dry, folded and put away so quickly that it's worth it. I can't be doing with having wet clothes all round the house on airers.
I pay £45 a month for Gas and Electricity and am in credit by £167 to cover the winter months heavier usage. The time saved in moving and turning the clothes to get them dry on airers is worth it to me.
I agree with the vinegar tho - you can't smell it and it makes everything so soft."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
If you want to cut back on wet towels, rub yourself over with a dry flanell before you dry yourself. Your towel will last a couple of weeks as it wont get wet or dirty.
I wouldnt get rid of the drier though-just cut back on it. Can you dry your washing on airers? Do you do much ironing?
If you just finish the clothes off in the drier for ten mins-they dont need ironing so this compensates for the electric used in your drier more or less.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -

I dry on line-weather permitting then finish in the TD to fluff up and soften

My combo washing machine/dryer broke down years ago. Dryer was still working, so was put in the garage, and only used really for emergency purposes. It finally died too and never replaced it, as I don't have room in the kitchen, and didn't like going to the garage in bad weather.
Dry washing outside on a good day, even if cold - if wind about that does help. Then on clothes horse to finish off. Wet day, has to be clothes horse (some folk call them airers).
Got some over radiator things from Argos - you get 4, not sure of price but think they are less than £5. Good for drying towels and sheets/duvet covers and jeans- you do have to turn them about a bit though. Better than putting wet things straight on to your radiator.
Vinegar is definitely great as a fabric conditioner. I have the worst skin ever for breaking out due to allergies. Been using vinegar for ages, and skin is much better. Never had any vinegar smell on clothes, and am sure that some of my friends would have told me by now if I had. Even my fussy teenage daughter can't smell it - she was horrified when she saw what I was doing, insisted on smelling her clothes straight from the wash. Nice and fresh.
Towels can be used more than once to dry your body. Everyone has their own idea on this. We each have our own hook in the bathroom for bathtowel - what I suggest for my family is 2-3 uses, then they get washed.0 -
Tell them that Models dont use fabric conditioner and have scratchy towels, it boosts the circulation and acts as an exfoliator. My mum used to use fabric softener on towels till I told her that, now we all have glowing skin.... Just a thought anyway!
