Classic Highland Views
I was going to post this in the Travel, trips & holidays forum but thought i'd find more experts over here!!
I'm coming up to Scotland for a week at the end of September staying between Edinburgh and Glasgow, i've been through the Edinburgh and Glasgow stickies (really useful, thanks) for ideas but what i'm looking for is the classic amazing Scottish highlands view.
I'll have a car and don't mind a drive to get there, i'll be honest i'm not a hill walker (that dang diet is hard work!!) but I do enjoy a good walk.
I'm from Wales (but was born in Ayrshire!!) and i'm sure you good people can find me views to compete with the Brecon Beacons!!
Thanks in advance.

Depends on how far you want to drive, but the road from Glasgow up to Fort William is nice, you'll pass through Glencoe and across Rannoch Moor, some of the most beautiful and desolate scenery I've ever seen. And of course, go past Ben Nevis!0

Definitely depends how far you want to drive. You could drive to Aviemore to the cairngorms. There's some lovely views from there. Also Perthshire is nice particularly around Killiecrankie/Pitlochry. There's some nice walks round there too.
Personally, I think north of Inverness is beautiful - but I'm biased as I live there.Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts - DFW Nerd 323

Knew I should have been more specific in my original post. I enjoy driving but on days out like to limit myself to two hours out and two hours in. For further information staying just outside Biggar.
Thanks for the replies so far.

I'll second the A82, lots of official calendar type views epecially the black mount and glencoe only 1 1/2 hours from glasgow. You can get the chairlift at glencoe (Ithink its open in the summer) and at nevis range (a few miles out of Fort William open all year) for even better views. Even further away is Loch Sheil and Lochailort and Glen Finnan (Harry Potter railway bridge) and if you carry on up that way get to Arisaig with beautiful beaches and views over to the small isles and Sky. Loch Morar as well is great and also has a monster called Morag less well known, not got a good publicist.
For Autumn colour try Callander and Aberfoyle.
A forgotten area is the Ayrshire coast, places like Culzean castle you get great views across to Arran and Ailsa CraigJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Sorry, I didn't read your last post before replying, Bigger's a fairly long way from anywhere :rotfl::rotfl:
Sorry, no but seriously near to where you are are a fair number of castles if you like that sort of thing, my favourite's Traquair House. You could also go to North Berwick which is a lovely seaside town and has a very small hill which you could manage!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
The view from Stirling Castle walls across to the Wallace monument is nice, but isn't really big mountainous regions. Or go to the Wallace monument and look down over the land to see where the battle of Stirling Bridge was, and where we dumped:p the English who outnumbered us. Great tactical battle.
The south of Scotland down from Kilmarnock and Stranraer has a wonderful coast road, very scenic and not that busy once you pass the ferry terminals.
The road into Thornhill (12 miles north of Dumfries) is a beautiful drive, it might be a bit nearer where you're staying. Nice pub lunch to be had too.Again more rolling hills than big mountains.
ps the Trossachs are within reach of you - try googling them! - and you can't say you get to do that every day!!
Queen's view outside of Pitlochry is picture postcard, but maybe a bit far away.
The view from the Law hill in Dundee is nice, you can drive up it - but it is cityscape and a view down to the carse of Gowrie and the River Tay - nice on a clear day - Sidlaw hills to the back view.Under 2 niles from where you are, Captain Scott's ship Discovery is moored there, free parking next door at the Brewer's Fayre.;) Along the road a bit is Broughty Ferry, nice beach for a wee walk to take the Ozone, nice little shops too in the 'Ferry main street if you've a shopper with you.
Kilmarnock's Dean Castle is nice - are you going on your own, or with kids?Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Its a shame you will be so far away. Moray and the moray firth is lovely and as are Inverness and Aberdeen.Vampires Rock :eek:0

You wont get the Highlands within 2 hours of Biggar but you will get the Pentland Hills on the doorstep. Drive North up either the A702 or A70 and you would be either side of the chain and there are plenty of side roads that will take you right in amongst the peaks and reservoirs.
To the East there is Peebles and nearby Traquair House and slightly further almost due North is Bo'ness with its steam railway.0 -
Thanks for the info everybody, next time I come up i'll drive that bit further and stay further North but I'll certainly look at all your suggestions so far.
Thanks again.
