Hi,
I am hoping someone out there will be able to guide us in the right way.
My Mother has received a letter from these people chasing for her sons ex wife who has debt. The ex wife has never lived at this address. My Mother is 86 has never had any debt of her own.
The ex wife doesn't live in this country and hasn't for a long time.
We spoke to this compnay this morning and they want a utility bill for my Mother to prove she lives there ?
Over a period of time regular letters arrive from different companies, what are we suppose to do to prove the woman with debt has never lived there.
Any help gratefully received.

I'd advise you to get in touch with your local CAB asap.
In the meantime I'd be returning the letters (I assume they aren't addressed to your mother?) as not known at this address.Homeowner with 1st mortgage sine Dec 09

Your mother should not provide anything to this company.
There have been cases where debt collection companies have changed the name on the debt to the people who live in the house.
As westy85 said get in touch with the CAB and tell your mother (or do it for her) to return the letters.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Under NO circumstances send anything to CRS. Your mother is not responsible for somebody elses debt and should not enter into dialogue with them.
You DO NOT have to prove anything. If you receive further letters you should NOT open them, but return them to the sender marked 'not known at this address'. If you receive a phonecall you should say that any further calls will be classed as harrassment and you will take action against them.
It is up to CRS to find out for themselves where the debt lays.0 -
Many thanks for everyones replies.
This has been going on a while, and I gather that every now and then the debt is sold on to another company or that is how it seems. Solicitors have written to previous Companies but this seems to be a continuing circle.
Todays request for a Utility Bill was a great concern, one that I wouldn't follow, the main objective is to have my Mothers address removed from their database but they seem to be extremely unwilling to do this.
I'm sure there is more that can be done, but its just getting it right.0
