Sorting out Energy company debt, they want to cut off or put on card meter

I have posted this in the debt forum because it is part of my overall debt problem.
Having got some debts sorted my next biggest problem is my Energy company, Scottish & Southern.
They are looking to disconnect or swap me to a card meter.
I owe them just under £1,000.
I would of course prefer not to go onto a card meter for a number of reasons, some of them health.
I would instead prefer to arrange some kind of repayment plan for the debt and maybe some kind of budget plan for any new costs.
What are my options, do I have any, they seem to want to put this meter in, telling me it wont cost me any more than my current plan, etc but I am not to sure what with all the press.
I am not working at present and am on Job Seekers Allowance, this is the contributions based type but I am single and live alone. Please dont suggest things I cannot apply for under contributions based.
Your help appreciated, I really want to do something on this after the holiday is over here in England.
Thanks
