Free vehicle tax disc for disabled people

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/TaxationClasses/DG_4022044

If you’re a disabled person you may be exempt from paying vehicle excise duty (vehicle tax) if you are in receipt of the higher rate of mobility of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or have an invalid carriage.

I have a son with learning difficulties and I have just received a doctors recommendation form to be signed by GP to be eligible for a free bus pass for him!! Enquire at your local council.:T

If you get the higher rate you are also entitled to a blue badge which you can take with you on most vehicles. Some councils also will allow for free a carer free on the bus, this can include family members, brothers, sisters, mums and dads as long as they arent too young and are look like they can help

The vehicle doesn't have to be registered to the disabled person but has be used for them for getting around or for errands like getting shopping/prescriptions etc

You can also get free passage over certain toll bridges & Tunnels,

Some you just need to show your blue badge - River Severn,
Some you need to register - Dartford Tunnel/ Bridge

You can also get exemption from the London Congestion Charge but you need to pay to register,

My advice - If you have to pay to get somewhere check the web site for exemptions:money:

In Scotland, we have a slightly different system. Its the same rules for Car Tax exemption. But check if you receive DLA care rate as high and middle (I think also), can apply for a travel card for Scotland wide travel at free OR concessionary rate (also with a companion travel).
Also if you are registered as blind even if you work you can get a Scotland wide travel card, that allows you free bus, train and underground travel (check on ferry travel).

Any of your local Social Work offices can help and also check on blue badges if you can get a travel card, even if you dont drive you can still have one that you can use when someone is driving you somewhere and you are with them when they park.

I have a blue badge even though I don't drive, don't own a car and don't claim mobility allowance but can't walk far. My local authority considers individual circumstances for the blue badge.

I have looked up the free bus pass on the LA website but it refers to "registered disabled" - how out of date is that?!
