student tax enquiry

Iwonder if anyone can help.

im a little confused as to wether i am entitled to cliam back tax ive paid.

i worked for 15 months form late june 04 - to early september 05 - on a full time sadwich year as part of my degree course, which i must do.

i earned after tax £792 per month.

i paid both tax and N ational insurance.

I also claimed back just short of £2 grand over the 15 months on mileage allowance.


As a full time student - and as my work placment was their as part of my degree to get a hands on experience, am i entitled to claim the tax back?


on a second note.

i had a part-time job from sept 2002 till june/july 2003 and paid tax.
at the time i was a full time student and earned roughly £1500 for the hours i worked.

can i claim the tax back for this?

how do i go about it?

i recieved a letter (i guess its linked to my second question) from the inland revenue asking if i would like to make up my state pension qualification and pay an extra £222.50 pounds for the tax year 2003-04.

what are they on bout.

i barely worked during this tax year, and had a period of unemployment while bieng a full time student form june/july 03 - to june 04.

can i claim back national insurance i shouldnt have paid?

    Points 1 & 2:

    Everyone pays tax when their earnings in any tax year is greater than their personal allowance, which for the last tax year (which ended 5 April 2005) was £4745.

    If in any of the tax years mentioned you earnt more than your personal allowance, then you will have paid tax, and are not due it back unless too much was deducted.

    Same with NI. When your earnings in any week are over a certain amount (£91 if I remember correctly) then you pay NI. You cannot claim NI back.

    You say you worked till September 2005. That is in the 2005-06 tax year, which has not yet ended. If you do not plan to work again untill after 6 April 2006, then you will probably be due a refund of some/all of the tax already deducted in this year, as you will not have received the full benefit of your allowances due to only working for part of the tax year.

    What they are on about is that in that tax year you paid some NI insurance contributions, but not enough to count towards your state pension. I think it can also count towards claiming Maternity Allowance, but I'm assuming this isn't relevant to you.

    They are asking if you would like to pay an extra £222.50 to make that year's contributions up to a full year - only full years count.

    ctm is quite right that you can't ever claim back NI.

    To reclaim tax you might have overpaid, phone your local tax office (no. in phone book, if not under Inland Revenue then look under HMRC) and explain the situation. They should be able to send you tax returns for the tax years 02-03, 03-04 and 04-05.

  • There are certain times that you can claim back National Insurance contributions (they do not apply to the OP but they do exist) Some examples would be : - continue to work over 60 but NI deducted by employer in error....having 2 jobs where total income combined is more than £630 per week(if only)..the reason for claiming a refund in this instance would be that 11% is paid on earnings (PAYE) up to £630 but only 1% on income above £630 per week (each employer would have deducted 11% oblivious of the other income) certain self employed people could also apply for a refund (eg did not apply for small earnings exception in time or stopped being self employed part year)
    Daveram13 .. based on the info you have given you are likely to be due a refund for 02-3 and 03-4(if you paid tax on the £1500) No refund likely for 04-5 but refund would be due for the current year if you will have no further income. You just need to write a letter, enclose your P45's and P60`s(original) and details of your gaps in employment.
    I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
