Smashedbooboo- The only other debts were a couple of credit cards in his name, I sent copies of death certificate and letter saying no money in estate and they ave written them off.
Rog2- They did not get access to house, DD's boyfriend was not even told who they were, nor did they leave a card, will make sure I park car away from drive for next few days but as I work till 5.30 every day and DD and BF are at college there will be no one in, my only concern is if they go to a neighbours and try and get info out of them also DD's BF told them son does not live here anymore can they find out his new address.
I am worried sick over this and just want no more hassle in my life."In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance.0 -

I understand exactly how you feel, kiora. These 'people' should NOT try to get information from your neighbours, though often they will, but must not discuss the reason for their visit with the neighbours.
You do need someone 'working with you' and I suggest that you talk with your local CAB on Tuesday (even Monday if it isn't a Bank Holiday in Scotland
).
Good luck.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Like rog2 says, try CAB for this. You are not liable for the council tax but your son would normally be liable. This is because even if he is/was a student, he is jointly and severally liable for the council tax bill, even though he might have been exempt on his own account. The bill is for the property mnot the individual. (This is why it can be a bad idea for students to share with people who aren't.)
But I don't know how his dad's death would affect that liability, as others have said if the council had a shred of decency they would write it off.0 -
Cant be of much help with baliffs, but wanted to advise that as Monday is not a Bank Holiday in Scotland - the councils and CAB should be available tomorrow morning, it may even be worth going down to the council tax office and waiting for a face to face appointment? then you have a name to quote in the future?
Good luck, will think of you.0 -
And if you get nowhere with the council staff, go through your local councillor. When I worked in the local authority, all mail from councillors had to be responded to in 2 days, while for the public it was 28 days!Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0

Thanks to all you lovely peeps that have replied to my post, I will have to phone the council in question as their offices are oer 100 miles away, will tell them what the deal is, hopefully they will be sympathetic,if it comes to it that I have to pay them then I will offer them £5 a week as that is all they are getting offered.
Will update either tomorrow or Tuesday, many tanks for all your help.:A"In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance.0 -
Good luck in talking to the council, kiora, but if there is any negativity from them, get on to your local CAB as well.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. Hi Peeps
Well phoned the council today and poke to a really nice lady(not a bank holiday in Scotland) and after explaining to her and getting very tearfull she has actually written the debt off, said it should never got this far, she is even going to reimburse any money I have already paid to debt. A small victory and a slight happy dance:j"In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance.0 -
