Feeling pleased and more...

Sorry if this is in the wrong section...

This is my first post after mooching on these boards for ages. OH and me have officially kick started our MS life with this evening's meal. A nice piece of steak and home-made oven chips for £1.90 each. It's amazing how nice the chips were compared to bought oven chips, and they cost 20p to make! It might not be up to OS standards (yet!), but we're only beginners:o. As strange as it sounds, I was pleasantly surprised with how tasty braising steak is

On a side note, could anyone tell me how a local butcher/farm shop compares to supermarkets value/price wise? We want to start buying locally as much as we can, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't mean to be rude, but what is OH, is it like 'Ohh' as in emotion?

and MS, is that Marks + Spensor?

and OS standards?....organic safefood?, original stuff?, orgasmic standard?

Hello Pretani - some of the abbreviations had me befuddled for a while after I joined - so I appreciate how confusing it can be for a relative newcomer. Hope I'm telling you these correctly - I'm sure that if not, somebody else will come along and let me know - so fingers crossed :D.

Ha - you got there before me!!

Anyway, well done jimmydee, thats a great start, and you may well find as the savings add up the incentive increases!

Butchers and farms shops vary in prices compared to supermarkets. Some people get far better value, some not. You really need to just look and see! but the quality will be better regardless, I suspect!

For a list of the abreviations used in the chat forums have a look at the Unofficial A-Z (Look here first) under Abbreviations on MSE

Thanks all. I just can't get to grips with all this text stuff. Have these forums a language of their own or is it a universal language? ie- ms- Moneysaving, os - Old style

Hi Jimmy, sorry for using your thread to understand the abreviations used in the forum.
I was pleasantly surprised with how tasty braising steak is

Frying steak tastes even better (fried low for about 40 minutes) I would even go as far as to say it's nearly as good as an aberdeen angus:D

Our local butcher, who rares his own cattle, sells 2 pound of sausages for the price of one. Ends up £3:00 for around 14 good sized sausages. He sells pork roast for £5:00, it's a nice flavourfull piece of meat (around 10 inch X 5 inch), it's either pork collar or shoulder put into an elastic string netting (feeds 6). It's good marinated in chinese powder, turns out like the pork chow mein you get from chinese take-aways.

Pork loin is another cheap and delicious cut of meat. Buy £10 worth and slice into chops and freeze.

and he sells mince "buy a pound get a pound free" (£2:00/pound)

search around different butchers, there are offers out there.
