reasonably priced baby wool?

i have recently taken up knitting in an attempt to keep my hands busy as i am giving up smoking. i got the idea of knitting premature baby knitwear for my local hospital as i was in one with my son 14 years old and remember how grareful staff and new mums were when a little package of hand knitted items that actually fitted their tiny babies arrive. me especially my son was one and a half pounds and i could not afford trendy baby boutiques to buy diddy items for him while he was in hospital. ANYHOW, i digress. i managed to get a ball of wool on ebay recently that started me off, but generally speaking there are never any real bargains once you had p & p. so for the past few weeks i have had family and friends on the hunt for me, with no luck. where are all those dusty little wool shops that i remember from my past youth? besides ebay all that is on offer is the large haberdashery department in the big high street stores. these too are very expensive for what i want which is pastel colour 3ply,4 ply or double knit wool. is there anyone out there who can help? boot sales has been suggested to me and sounds like an excellent idea however i have none in my area. please please please let me know where i can find some. i will be going into hospital soon for back surgery and can see many hours ahead that i need to fill, hopefully in a productive way. thanks all x

Good luck with giving up smoking.
Most of the good wool shops seem to have disappeared, especially in my nearest city Preston. It seems the best places for small wool shops are in the villages if you are near any. You could always try a search in your local Yellow pages. I used to love using Sirdar wools when my children were small. It washed well and kept its shape. If you buy cheaper wools it sometimes goes bobby and expands or shrinks with each wash.
Sirdar online is at http://www.sirdar.co.uk/
Although with delivery charges, the costs aren't cheap.
There are lots of wool sellers on Ebay where prices may be better.
Good luck, let us know how you get on0 -

Try Dunelm Mill if you've got one near you. They have a bargain basket sometimes too.

i know i can just press thanks button but felt i needed more than that especially with good wishes for my surgery. i did not know wilkinsons or poundstretchers did wool so that will be my first port of call if i can persuade hubby to take me out. am sitting waiting for new date for hospital admission as they cancelled mine last thursday which was very upsetting. so sat here staring at packed case and nowhere to go, even more reason to keep busy with my knitting, again thank you everyone and keep the suggestions coming xx0

I have bought the double knitting wool at poundstrechers and wilkinson, and also qd , very good value, and as long as you check machine washable, they've been fine. I have crocheted large blankets/afghans with this wool and it has kept its shape well.
Sorry to hear about the cancellation, but hopefully you'll be fixed up soon!Good luck!!Comping Challenge £360 / reached Feb!
