Fresh Milk - half price

This follows on from my previous posting re: liquid soap.
As an adult who needs to cut down on cholesterol, I downgraded from full fat to semi-skimmed milk some time ago.
For the last month or so, however, each time I use milk on my morning bowl of cereal, I pour in half milk, then half water. I'm not actually doing this to save money, as I like milk for the taste, but it does go twice as far, and, on cereal, you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference.
I wouldn't dream of doing this to the kids' full fat milk, as their bodies benefit from the full concentration, but adults don't need it, so I'm being healthier and saving money too!

Well done you, fattydeposit!
I'm sure you're right about it being healthier, but I must admit I get semi-skimmed just to put on my cereal! I prefer skimmed in tea and coffee, and DH has it on his cereal, but I just can't get used to it on mine! - it makes me feel deprived!

Hi Ivyleaf,
I may have a solution for you! This may sound unpalatable, but hear me out.
I discovered a long time ago that UHT skimmed milk has a much richer taste than fresh skimmed milk. You know how UHT full fat milk has a strong taste (of something, not quite sure what), well, UHT skimmed milk seems to provide more taste and substance than fresh skimmed, without making it too dissimilar in taste to fresh milk. In fact, on a bowl of cereal, it tastes a lot like semi-skimmed fresh milk, whilst being healthier, and usually cheaper too. Not only that, but you can store loads of it unopened in a cupboard for ages.
I would still use it now, but my wife buys the milk, so I'm stuck with fresh semi-skimmed, which I dilute with water (for me, not her!).0 -
I remember my mum once diluted the milk for coffees because we were running low on milk, but she neglected to tell me, so I unwittingly put the watered down milk on my breakfast cereal. If you like it that way then good for you, but I certainly wouldn't care to repeat the experience!
I have an old book, The Concise Household Encyclopedia (published in the early 1930s) which advises that a special device can be used to check if your milk has been diluted or skimmed, by checking how far the device sinks!0 -
I mostly buy UHT skimmed anyway. (can't stand any other type of UHT cos of that horrible taste!) but apparently skimmed has the same amount of calcium anyway which is the important thing. I like the fact that you can buy a whole month's supply and keep it in the larder - don't have to go out shopping for it or pay delivery prices - and it's really cheap, too! 35p for 1 litre in most supermarkets.
Mind you, I have never managed to get tesco to deliver the entire amount I ordered online when I have ordered a month's supply of milk. Once they even asked me if that was the number I really wanted to order. This is one of the main reasons why I have given up ordering online.
I have also made up milk powder, & they have all drank it without knowing. It tastes the same as skimmed milk, but if you drink it straight away it somehow feels like its made up powdered milk. However, if you leave it in the fridge for an hour or so before drinking it, it is fine!0 -
I always dilute full fat milk to 50% and to me it tastes no different to semi-skimmed.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0

I might a little water to my milk if we are running low and I don't want to go to the shop for some more.
But we use skimmed which is a pain as the shop 2 min walk from my house does not stock. So have to walk half way across the estate 6mins to get it. I know lazy mooooo.
Also I find Aldi and Lidls don't stock it. But due to husband needing to put some weight on might have to go back to full fat. Ughhhhh.
Oh and Iceland are doing 4 pints of milk for a £1.

Yes, we sell out early on Fridays as nobody wants the 6 pint bottles any more.
Anyway, I always keep a stock of full cream uht-kids hate it as it has a strong taste, but its great watered down-even better than watering down fresh full cream. I laways keep dried milk also-its great when making custard. UHT for yoghurt. Fresh is best for everything else. Good to keep some evaporated as well. If you have room, you can freeze fresh milk, but I find its best to use a little first from the bottle, to allow for expansion when it freezes.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0
