It's all very well this type of company giving away free teddies - but all they are trying to do is persuade you to buy artificial baby food. As Money Saving Experts we should be encouraging breastfeeding. It saves money - saves the agravation of warming bottles, sterilising etc etc. And most important, gives your child the best start in life. Did you know there is little or no control over what ingredients are and are not allowed in artificial baby milk. Peanut oil used to be in the ingredients - hmm - I wonder if there's a connection with all the peanut allergy sufferers nowadays?

Anyway - save money and do what's right - boycott these companies and breastfeed.

All well and good but you're forgetting about people who can't breastfeed for whatever reason and of course babies who fail to do well on it, like my son who lost over 10% of his birthweight last week so we've been told to do bottle topups and if it were not for these companies people in this situation would be in serious trouble

I dont mean to upset anyone. It may help you to know that I recently came across a lovely lady who is a lactation consultant - you may be able to find one in your area. The problem is that once you start 'topping up' your supply will drop unless you express at the same time. I'm just saying please look at all the options, such as contacting the NCT breastfeeding counsillors, or a lactation specialist, or going to a local support group if there's one in your area or trying all the positions to get a good one for you. No one has the right to 'tell you' to bottle top up - it's your decision. I know it's a very emotional time, but I believe the benefits are so HUGE that it's worth making every effort.

it is,but if mums body wont produce enough then theres not a lot can be done(yes we had a lot of help on trying to)
we tried but Joshua just wasnt getting enough to eat
its a hard enough choice to make without being made to feel like your 'failing' as a parent right at the start
  • Obviously meant 'complete' and 'compounding'
    DOH!
  • just signed up it seams to have changed since i had my last child

I used formula and breast milk. The formula was useful for when I wasn't there, I had trouble expressing. My friend, who is a midwife, said to try formula, I wasn't keen, but it was fine. However, I breast fed until my daughter was two and a half, my milk didn't dry up. Ultimately it was only last thing at night as this was all that would get her to bed (she has never slept!! except in the mornings when I'm trying to get her up for school - and she's 13 now!!). She never had a dummy or muslin, or any other security blanket, so I think breastfeeding was her security blanket. In the end, she decided to stop.

I would definitely advocate 'Breast is Best'! but I do know people who just couldn't do it and I think some just don't want because they believe it will somehow make their breasts less attractive. I loved breastfeeding but it's not for everyone - it is their choice.
Ooh, I've gotta little star! What's that for then?!!
  • How is it ok for people to bash bottle feeders but it's not ok for us to defend ourselves!! Post removed I'm assuming as someone took offence. You really need to think about peoples feelings before making glib comments and people should be entitled to reply.

I'm lost again - I wasn't bashing bottle feeders - each to their own and good luck to any new mums - it is your decision, do what you think best, don't be forced into doing something you don't want to. I didn't want to have a section, but had no choice, I'll always wonder what a natural birth would have been like and if I would have felt any different (and I'm not talking pain levels here!).
