Does Lecithin actually work?

Hi,
Ive been recently dieting and was told by a very good freind of mine to try lecithin with cereal and in other foods. You just basically sprinkle it on certain foods and it is SUPPOSED to break down fat.

Now ive been trying this for two months or so, and as well as doing the normal routine excercisory stuff i have ACTUALLY lost weight. But im not sure if lecithin has anything to do with it or not.

I was just wondering how many people have tried it and feel the same or know things that my ignorant mind bypasses..lol:D

Please help

    Hi Sarah,

You should get more help with this on the Health and Beauty board so I'll move your thread across.

There is no scientific research that shows that lecithin aids in weight loss. In fact, lecithin supplements may actually cause weight gain due to the fact that it contains fatty acids and is thus highly caloric. There is just no validity to the rationale behind the weight loss claim. Lecithin makes sure that the fat and cholesterol that is travelling through the blood stream stays solvent in the water so that it will not attach to the artery walls. Even though lecithin does disperse fat in water and keeps fat from clogging the cardiovascular system, this does not mean that the subcutaneous fat that we associate with being overweight is just dissolved and flushed out by lecithin.

Gastric bezoar caused by lecithin: an unusual complication of health faddism.
We discovered an unusual bezoar in a previously healthy man who had been ingesting large amounts of a vegetable-derived oil touted to contain lecithin, which he purchased from health food stores in the belief that it had beneficial effects in lowering cholesterol levels and improving memory. The large intragastric mass, composed of fatty acids and lecithin, led to considerable morbidity, including abdominal pain, early satiety, and significant weight loss, and required surgical removal.

It's the cereal you eat that stops your body burning fat.
Reduce your refined carbohydrate intake and you allow your body to use the fat that is stored. Your muscles and brain function more effectively when provided with the fuel the evolved to use. this is the plan I've followed It's dead easy, no weighing, no counting calories/carbs, no special meal plans or cost involved at all.

We can't work it out While I do NOT want to discourage you at all from normal routine excercisory stuff as exercise is good for your heart and your brain, you should be aware the evidence in relation to weight loss is simply not there. None of my weight loss had anything to do with exercise at all. Exercise is not an option for me.

If I can lose 2.25lb each week without exercising at all, so can everyone else.

  • Lecithin is definitely a great supplement for helping to break down fat and keep it moving, but I don't know that it's primarily used to assist with weight loss. Lecithin is an emulsifier, so it works to prevent plaque and fat from forming in places like arterial walls. It also works to help lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol. So it's definitely a great supplement to be taking, and may help somewhat with weight loss, but weight loss is definitely not the primary purpose of lecithin. But if you have it or need to work on lowering your cholesterol, then definitely continue to take it! It's great for you. It's also really reasonable too (I think it's only about $3 where I get my supplements at seacaostvitamins.com).

Is there a way of following this diet as a vegeterian? Could the protein element be replaced by Quorn?
