When my first son turned one we bought all 1st birthday decorations and tableware and it cost so much money, it was really silly. Since then I have gone for some themed stuff and plain other stuff whihc works out much cheaper but still looks the part. I would buy plain plates, cups, napkins and maybe a patterned tablecloth (if using) and decorate the room with balloons etc.

Do you bake? How about making a cake. This is a good recipe or you could do individual cupcakes/fairy cakes.

You could make some cut out number 1 biscuits. Recipe that I've used before (Nigella Lawson recipe). This makes loads so if you are only having a few people round, could halve the following...
    175g soft butter
    200g caster sugar
    2 large eggs
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    400g plain flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    300g icing sugar
    food colouring (to colour icing)

    1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees/ gas mark 4
    2. Cream butter & sugar together until pale
    3. Beat in eggs & vanilla extract
    4. In another bowl combine the flour, baking powder & salt
    5. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix gently. If you think the finished mixture is too sticky to be rolled out, add a bit more flour
    6. Halve the dough and wrap each half n clingfilm and rest in the fridge for at least an hour (I made my dough the night before so mine rested approx 12 hours)
    7. Sprinkle your rolling out surface with flour, place a half of dough on and roll to thickness of about 1/2cm (half a cm). I found the dough blooming hard to roll as it was staright from fridge. It took a while to get it 'pliable' enough to roll it properly
    8. Cut into required shape, dipping the cutter in flour as you go
    9. Place biscuit shapes on baking tray/s
    10. Bake for 8-12 minutes & then cool on a wire rack (biscuits should be lightly golden around the edges)
    11. Continue with the second piece of dough from fridge
    12. To make the icing add a couple of tbsp of nearly boiling water ina bowl with the icing sugar and mix, adding more water if required to form a thick paste (my mix needed loads more water)
    13. Add food colouring if using and get icing!

    HTH :D

It'll follow the "tea party" theme I now have in mind.... And paying for 5 letters isn't going to cost the earth not like if I had a go at making it :o

    Thank you xx

The cupcake ones would be gorgeous if you're planning a 'tea party' :) I didn't think through the cost of personalised things when naming my daughter, 8 letters really adds up lol!
