As you say you can cancel your direct debit at any time but you must
alos cancel with the company. They have no way of knowing you want to cancel unless you actually tell them. Cancelling the direct debit doesnt constitute cancelling the subscription and they wil likely chase you for the money.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Yes, I always make sure I cancel with the company as well as my bank. The question is still though, that the subscription is still outstanding from their point of view if they say 'minimum subscription term 12 months' so I wonder if other MSE's have any problems when they try to cancel before the 12 months?

depending on the magazine that you are considering subscribing to, quite a few mags now do a trial subscription where you get 3 issues for £1 or £3 or something like that - might be worth seeing if the ones you are thinking of do that?

These are the subscriptions I take out now - clearly only committing me to a maximum of say 3 months.
I receive emails directly from magazine companies, and even phone calls asking if I want to take out trial subscriptions. so clearly my track record of the past few years taking out dozens of short term subscriptions and not continuing for 12 months has not stopped the magazine houses chasing me for business.
Previously I signed up for a short term subscription, but forgot to check and cancel the DD. Next quaters dd taken before I realised - but I phoned to complain, and pointed out I had been contacted by them, offering me a short term trial subscription, and I never had any intention of continuing. I got the dd fully refunded immediately (even though they had already sent the next mag) and chap on phone couldn't have been more helpful and apologetic.

Years ago ( before mse:rolleyes:) I took out yearly subscriptions with mags like Cosmopolitan and House Beautiful etc, and after 12 months the subs rose to their full RRP, and like a naive idiot I never quite got round to cancelling.
I was the type of consumer who make the mags their profit. That is why mags offer the cheap start price and free gifts, to entice you to sign up, but hope you forget to cancel.

I never take out 12 months subs, and have never been contacted by the magazine demanding I re-instate the dd or pay by other means. They have written to note the dd has been cancelled and point out if I wish to continue receiving the mag I need to contact them to set up another dd

re steve xx - I have never been contacted to say I have a debt which needs paying, so therefore I assume no-one can have a record of me which will affect my credit rating. Many of the magazines I take trials out with I have had several such short-term subscriptions in the past, so they would hardly keep signing me up again - nay even emailing me and phoning me up offering me trail subscritions, if they saw me in this light.

I also take out short term subs as presents for neices/nephews and friends. Last year I did about 6 for Christmas.

I have never signed up for mags just for the free gift, although I know lots on the magazine thread seem to. If there is a free gift, that is a bonus, not the reason I sign up. Again, some mags clearly advertise say "3 months for £3 plus a free gift" If you take up that offer what are you doing wrong ?
