Help! - Which do I pay?

Hi Hope we are all well

I have some confusion with my Nationwide Credit Card. I need to pay it off today as I got a letter saying the collectors will be round in 72 hours to get the money! If they are unsuccessful they will send in the debt collections agency

Anyway the letter from Nationwide CC informs me that the amount due is £142. BUT the statement shows Minimum payment due £211.

Which amount do I pay today?

Off to the bank in a while, decided to use my savings to get me back into my limit and then try and pay minimum payments each month and write them a letter to make them aware again I am on benefits.

The DMP road sounds good but am holding off as long as possible as things may get worse when my Incapacity Benefit is due for review in November so I may end up £300 a month less income.

I cant cope with the stresses anymore its putting a strain on me mentally and physically I seem to have stopped functioning normally everything revolves around these Credit Card debts and im acting more like a withdrawn child than a married woman and I dunno how long our marriage will survive like this its not fair on hubby!

Cant stand anymore phonecalls to housephone or mobile, hubbys already had to change to pay and go and get a new number as hes getting harrassed now with his own debts ive told him what I have learnt.

Ive not answered my mobile or landline for 4 weeks now yet they still dont get the message! The answermachine just kicks in so I can screen calls and if its anyone like family I will pick it up. The calls start at 830 am and continue to bombard me until 930pm 7 days a week! Ive tried asking them to write to me only but it seems even this is ignored now its not as if I owe massive amounts its just bullying and making me feel ill and like I am going mentally crazy!

HELP me please im a shaking wreck today!?

Could the statement be showing the amount due plus the latest minimum payment? The £140 is probably what is overdue and what needs to be paid to clear the arrears..
As for the phone calls there is a template letter somewhere (I'm sure someone will post it for you) requesting all contact to be made in writing and saying that any more phone calls will constitute harassment and be reported as such.
Have you spoken to anyone about te possibility of going on a DMP? If not I would suggest visiting your local CAB or calling the CCCS for advice and support. You say your incapacity benefit may be reduced... and if that is the case then your financial statement would be amended and any DMP payments adjusted accordingly.

I think I'd go with the statement - sorry it's the bigger amount :o
These figures are more likely to be accurate IMO.

You've been here a while, I hope you've used the template letters to get your creditors to contact you in writing?

    Dodgy hugs to you anyway.
  • Hi

Many thanks for the dodgy hugs and help.

Ive just had another look and the biggest bit I dont understand is the fact that my credit limit with NW is £1,500 and the ballance outstanding is £1,661 therefore I owe £161. to get back to my limit.

Well im shaking like a leaf now with fear but I must get myself out to the bank and when I return I will have to answer the calls and tell all 4 credit cards I have paid cash today hopefully that will satisfy them for a while and I will feel better at least for the rest of the day.

    Heres hoping

If you're going to call them then literally just give them the information they need then hang up. This stops them trying to bully you into paying more.

    Hi huni

If its making you so bad I really recommend you go on DMP. If your circs change in Nov you can have a review and reduce your payments. I was in excatly the same position about 18 months ago before contacting CCCS and the phonecalls stopped overnight, in fact they stopped as soon as I informed them I was in touch with CCCS. My life has completely changed now and I'm a different person. I enjoy opening my bank statements now and seeing hoe far I've come. Call them - even if its just for advice Mx
  • I will try to be strong thanks.

Still sat here as its pouring with rain and its a long walk. So I am trying to decide whether to pay £211, £142 or £161. With the other 3 cards ive paid the minimum payment to get back into my limit and 'out of trouble'.

I suppose if I pay the £142 as per their letter then they will always request the rest next month? At least I can refer that I paid the amount they wrote to me about and that the letter is dated later than the statement

Call them and ask for an up to date balance and ask what you need to pay?

  • Well I did it I went to the bank and paid all 4 cards to get them back into theor limits just. Nationwide I decided to pay what the statement said and hopefully that will avoid any more demands. Lady at counter said it would be next Wednesday before it gets to my account due to bank holiday Monday  I completely forgot about it! Hubby's off 8am tomorrow morning and wont return till Monday night and as im stuck at home all weekend looking after 2 dogs dont think about things like bank holidays!

Well I must admit its a small weight off my mind I feel I can relax a little until Next month, life may start to function normally for a while and I can get on with those letters for bank charge and mis sold PPI reclaims, that will brng in some more cash to top up the savings keep me going a little longer ;)

    Thanks

It could be £161 plus over limit and late payment charges. I used to get charged £24 a month, £12 for over limit and £12 for late payment. Am just about to start reclaiming, make sure you do too!
  • That peace was short lived phone rang so I answered it silence for a moment I think they were so stunned to hear me in person not answerphone !

I  Spoke too soon! Had a call from one credit card which I bravely answered told them I made a cash payment today, they said ok but you now owe us another £125. as the payment you made today was the minimum payment of your last statement, when can you make that paymement? I said I didnt know so they told me they will make a note that I have paid £105 today but I owe £125 and they cant guarantee that charges will stop and calls will continue! Will send them a letter reguarding calls but do I go and pay the extra now from savings or wait until next month?

Just about to call others and see what they say, when I want the phone to ring so I dont have to pay the call cost it doesnt!

Called all other cards up luckily there is only 1 other card that also has 'outstanding' amount of £161. which beleive it or not is Nationwide! I said I would try and pay them by end of month.

I have found an extra slip to make extra payment to 1 card but cant find a spare one for Nationwide (the ones 'threatening me') so can I still pay it without the slip? Just give the account number at counter?
